Team SEES is taking on the Great South Run! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️💚

This weekend, members of Team SEES will be running on both Saturday and Sunday at the AJ Bell Great South Run, raising money for Naomi House & Jacksplace.

Naomi House provides specialist care and support for children and young adults with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, as well as their families.

It is very simple really: children shouldn’t have to go through these things. And when they do, they and their families deserve every bit of care, support and kindness we can give them.

So, while there may be some questionable decisions being made around pace, training plans and whether signing up for two days of running was entirely sensible… there is a very good reason behind it. 💚

Wi******er construction professionals – Whole Life Carbon is coming onto your radar.

On Tuesday 15 September at 12:30 pm, SEES will be running a free lunchtime training session for local architects, planning consultants, developers and contractors on Whole Life Carbon, Embodied Carbon and Wi******er planning requirements.

We can deliver the session at your offices, making it an easy lunchtime CPD-style session for your team.

Whole Life Carbon Assessments can be required for several different reasons, planning, BREEAM, ESG commitments, client requirements or increasingly as part of a net zero carbon strategy.

The problem is that they don't all ask for quite the same thing. We'll explain in plain English:

- What WLCA, LCA, upfront carbon and embodied carbon actually mean
- What A1–A5, B1–B7, C1–C4 and Module D represent
- The differences between RICS, BREEAM v7, planning assessments and the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard
- Wi******er Policy CN8 and what this means for local development
- When an assessment needs to start
- What information architects and the wider design team need to provide
- How carbon assessment can actually influence design rather than simply becoming another report produced for compliance

One of the most important points we'll cover is timing.

At the point where we have the least detailed information about a building, we often have the greatest opportunity to reduce its carbon impact. By the time every product and quantity is known, many of the important design decisions have already been made.

The session is intended to be practical, informal and directly relevant to people designing, planning and delivering projects in and around Wi******er.

Meet the newest member of the SEES team Matthew Coe!

Matt joined us as our Graduate Energy Assessor and has been getting stuck into the world of SAP calculations, Building Regulations and sustainable design.

He's picking everything up quickly... except perhaps one thing.

The office phone. 📞

As a member of the younger generation, we suspect he's only ever known mobile phones. A desk phone appears to be a completely different species. Whenever it rings, there's a brief look of panic, followed by a silent hope that somebody else will answer it. We're working on it...

Fortunately, he's taking the office banter like a champion. Around SEES, a bit of gentle stick is all part of the induction process, and Matt has fitted in brilliantly.

Over the coming months he'll be developing his skills across our energy and sustainability services, learning from the team (and hopefully becoming slightly less suspicious of the telephone).

Team Day at Emsworth Cookery School 🍣🍛🍦

Today the SEES team swapped SAPs, air tests and sustainability reports for aprons, chopping boards and a healthy dose of culinary chaos at Emsworth Cookery School.

The challenge? Create Thai curries, sushi and homemade ice cream as a team. The verdict? Surprisingly edible. Some might even say delicious.
Highlights included:

✅ Learning new cooking skills
✅ Great teamwork outside the office
✅ Plenty of laughs along the way
✅ Discovering that precision in building performance calculations doesn't always translate to vegetable preparation...

The standout entertainment of the day was undoubtedly watching an overheating Assessor and Air Tester attempt to chop vegetables at what can only be described as a painfully sustainable rate of progress. If there was a BREEAM credit for slow chopping, we'd have secured Outstanding.

A special mention also goes to our newest recruit, Matthew Coe
who quickly identified the safest role in the kitchen and made sure the clean-up operation was under control. A wise man knows his strengths.

A fantastic day spent with a great team, learning something new and proving that worthing together extends well beyond construction and sustainability.

Thanks to Emsworth Cookery School for hosting us and keeping us all well-fed.

🔍 EPC reform update: progress… but not quite there yet

The Government’s partial response to the EPC reform consultation confirms that change is coming — including the move to four headline EPC metrics instead of a single cost-based rating.

That’s a positive step. But there are still some notable gaps that risk limiting how useful EPCs can really be — particularly for heritage buildings, HMOs, short-term lets, and in driving the right retrofit decisions.

We’ve published our detailed response on the SEES website, setting out:

- what’s still missing
- and what property owners, landlords and agents should be thinking about now

🎄✨ A festive heads-up before January arrives and we all have to sober up… ✨🎄

🔔 BREEAM New Construction – Registration Deadline Alert 🔔

The following BREEAM New Construction schemes will close for new registrations on 27 January 2026:

▪️ BREEAM UK New Construction 2018
▪️ BREEAM UK New Construction v6.1
▪️ BREEAM International New Construction v6

👉 Any projects intending to use these versions must be registered on BREEAM Projects before midnight on 27 January 2026 (standard registration fees apply).

📌 From this date, BREEAM New Construction v7 will be the only version available for new registrations, accessed via the BREEAM Platform.

⏳ Please also note: all existing registrations under the versions listed above will expire on 27 January 2031. Submissions after this date may receive an alternative output instead of a certificate.

The good news? 🎉

New Construction v7 is a strong step forward — with greater emphasis on environmental performance, whole-life impacts, carbon reduction, and future-ready buildings. For many projects, it offers a more robust and forward-looking sustainability framework.
