Do you follow company policy to the letter? Do you make decisions based on goals? Or do you leave it down to the employees?

Leading a team can be a very personal thing... we all have our own styles and ways of doing things.

You'd find it hard to find 2 leaders that go about things in exactly the same way.

That being said, there are a range of different leadership styles that people tend to find suits or mirrors what they do best.

It could be that this style is the one that comes naturally to the individual or it could be that they are consciously making an effort to lead in this way for the benefit of the team.

What's important is that not one of these leadership styles is better than the other - what works best is going to be very individual to the business, the team and their situation.

You've probably all heard of Chat GPT by now, but did you know, it is sneaking its way into recruitment?... And not in a good way...

I've been hearing an increasing number of stories of recruiters receiving applications in which screening questions have quite obviously been completed using AI tools such as Chat GPT. Giving you what they think you want to hear and not a true representation of the candidate.

You might wonder how is it obvious the answers are provided by AI? Well when a number of candidates deliver very similar answers to questions with little personalisation, suspicion arises that they may have plugged the question into an AI tool and copied the response. There can also be some inconsistencies in the grammar or language which just doesn't give confidence that the author is authentic.

So this is a warning to both recruiters and applicants...

โš ๏ธ ๐—”๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ - whilst it might seem like an easy route, putting false information will never bag you your dream job. You have a much better chance if you show the real you and answer questions in a way that is personal to you and your experience.

โš ๏ธ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ - be wary when asking generic screening questions, if all responses start to look very similar then you might have an issue. Try to include questions that require candidates to be personal and add real-life examples.

Christmas is already starting to feel like a distant memory and it's back into the full swing of working life.

I've been out of the home office for the first time this year, visiting a business in London.

The focus this time was planning with the People team for the year ahead.

As someone who does the majority of my work from home, I always love the chance to get out and meet others in person. Not just working but building the relationships too.

We definitely all felt the benefit of meeting up to have a productive work week and build rapport.

I think there's something special about the connections you can build when you're in the same room as someone, rather than only ever seeing them on a screen.

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ You might have seen that one of my new year goals was to do more running...

Unfortunately, I've already had to put that goal on hold after an accident over Christmas left me hobbling around on crutches - not exactly the ideal companion for running ๐Ÿ˜†

It goes to show that challenges always present themselves and we have to change our plans to adjust, and you never know, sometimes there is a silver lining.

For me, I struggle to take rest - always on the go managing a busy life, but I have been forced to rest and not be as active as normal. As frustrating as it was, I have felt the benefit of taking some rest, especially during the Christmas break.

Even if you don't want to, we all need to fully switch off sometimes and recharge our batteries. No one can operate at 100 miles an hour all year round.

So my key message is the importance of stepping away. Make sure to take time this year to switch your focus completely and focus on something other than work... rest is just as important!

It's the first working day back in 2024 and I hope you are all returning well-rested and full of good food!

It was great to take a step away from work for the last week and enjoy quality time with my family. But now I'm ready to jump back into all things HR.

I hope you all too had a good break, however you spent it.

With Elfie heading off on her festive break soon, it's time I did too!

2023 has been a great year for Bayside HR, but it's time to switch of my business brain and take a much-needed break.

So this is an early Merry Christmas from me. I hope you all have a special time however you spend and it come back in the new year rejuvenated and ready to go. ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŒŸ

It's been a full-on month so far for Elfie and to say she is exhausted would be an understatement.

When you spend 11 months of the year hidden in a cupboard, the 1 month you do work is 24/7 hard work and Elfie is reaching her limit. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

With her momentum fading and burnout approaching, it's clear that it's time soon for Elfie to take a break.

With less than a week till the big day, Santa has confirmed that all Elf on the Shelfs and reindeer can take their usual annual leave from January to November. He's even told then all to turn off their elf-mail notifications whilst they're away so they can really switch off. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

It's so important to give your team downtime to switch off and here's why...
๐Ÿ’ค For their health & wellbeing, breaks from work allow much-needed rest to focus on what is important to them
๐Ÿ’ค To avoid sickness absence at work, rest breaks & time off can avoid burnout situations
๐Ÿ’ค Turning off notifications is key to be able to fully switch off from work - not easy for many people but so important
๐Ÿ’ค To give them renewed energy when they do return to work

It seems that Elfie really has turned over a new leaf! โœจ๐ŸŒฟ

Santa only requires his Elf on the Shelfs to watch over the children and report back to him (with a bit of fun and mischief thrown in!) but Elfie has been going above and beyond for her assigned family.

Helping the parents wrap presents, putting together the packed lunches and cleaning up after herself - she's really turning into the model elf.

In her latest 1:1 with Santa, Elfie shared that she doesn't do all this because she has to, but because she cares and wants to help the North Pole's reputation.

Santa is impressed by her dedication and wants to thank her for her hard work. ๐Ÿ‘

So, how should you recognise those going above and beyond?
๐ŸŽ Never underestimate the power of a THANK YOU - it goes a long way to making your team feel appreciated
๐ŸŽ Give them a shout out in the team meeting (unless you know this is not how they like to be recognised!)
๐ŸŽ Consider promotion or development opportunities to recognise contributions
๐ŸŽ Give a small gesture of recognition like a gift card, a lunch out or something you know they will like

After last week's slip up, Santa assigned his top elf to mentor and support Elfie, giving her feedback along the way.

This helping hand has had a positive effect on Elfie and the impact has been seen in the quality of her work this week.

In their most recent sorting activity Elfie smashed it, taking her mentor's recommendation of adding labels to keep her on track.

Just a little bit of support can make a big difference ๐Ÿ˜€
