WHAT WOULD YOU PUT IN ROOM 101?

We decided the latest episode of Awesomely Off Topic needed to be a bit lighter, so we went to Room 101.

The idea was that we’d each answer a series of questions separately, without knowing what the other had chosen, then reveal our answers and argue about which one deserved to be banished forever.

That was the idea, anyway.

It turns out I’m not particularly good at this because I have an unfortunate habit of listening to Taz’s argument, deciding she has a point and then talking myself out of my own answer. 😳😉😂

We covered social media behaviour, business bu****it, fashion trends and household chores. We got into customer service and technology, had a good moan about driving and revisited some of the things that were perfectly normal when we were children and now make us wonder how on earth any of us survived.

I also discovered that I can be quite judgemental about something for approximately three minutes before I start thinking about why people might do it, feel guilty and begin defending the very thing I’d nominated for Room 101 in the first place.

Taz, unsurprisingly, found this very funny.

Amongst all the nonsense, we did wander into some much bigger conversations. One in particular was about forgiveness, what we actually mean by it and whether you really have to forgive someone before you can move on. That took us somewhere neither of us was expecting when we started recording.

As you’d expect from us, we went off topic more than once. The animals got involved, we changed our minds about a few things and somehow there was a discussion involving cucumbers that I’m still not entirely sure needed to happen.

We also considered introducing forfeits for future episodes, which could result in one of us having to spend 24 hours watching a television programme we really don’t like. I’m not sure we’ve thought that through properly.

If you were given the keys to Room 101 and could banish one thing forever, what would you put in there?

PS A pic of me in my book nook at Taz’s studio with Bailey, who I would never put in Room 101. Bless him. 😍

WHAT IF YOUR OWN VOICE COULD GUIDE YOU BACK TO CALM?

Imagine a book where your own voice guides you through the meditation.

How powerful could that be?

That was one of the thoughts behind The Little Book of Meditations and Mantras: Making Space for Calm, Clarity and Connection, my latest book, which has just gone live on Amazon.

When I was writing the meditations, I deliberately wrote them in the first person, so you can hear yourself speaking the words.

You don’t have to read them aloud, of course. You can read them quietly and hear the words in your mind instead. Either way, they become your words – something you can tune into when you need to slow things down, find a bit of clarity or reconnect with yourself.

As we know, life does get noisy. There are things to do, people who need us, places to be and thoughts competing for our attention, so sometimes we need to turn the volume down for a while.

Inside the book you’ll find guided meditations, mantras, questions and little invitations to help you do that. There are meditations for starting and ending the day, creating breathing space, clearing a busy head, listening to yourself, creating sacred space, connecting with an animal guide, finding a little courage when you need it and plenty more.

There’s no right or wrong way to use the book and you don’t need to work through it from beginning to end. Open it when you need it, choose what feels useful in that moment and leave what doesn’t.

Sometimes you don’t need to have all the answers, just a little breathing space.

YOUR BOOK DOESN’T HAVE TO BE HUGE

One of the things that can stop people from writing a book is the sheer size of the thing they think they have to create.

It’s easy to start thinking about 60,000 words, months (or years!) of writing and this enormous project you somehow need to fit around everything else you’re already doing.

It can certainly feel overwhelming before you’ve even written the first few pages.

That’s why writing a microbook can be a lovely way to get your writing confidence up and learn a new skill at the same time.

Your book doesn’t have to be huge or contain every bit of knowledge you’ve gathered over the years.

When you write a microbook, you can take one idea, one subject you know really well or one thing you know could genuinely help somebody, and turn it into a small, useful book that people can dip into again and again.

In my next online Microbook Programme, we’ll do exactly this over six weeks, starting in October.

I’ll help you work out what your book is really about, what needs to go into it (and, often more importantly, what doesn’t!), how to structure it and how to keep the whole thing manageable so you can actually get it written and finished.

By the end of the programme, you’ll have a fully edited and formatted manuscript, along with a designed cover, ready to publish through Amazon KDP, IngramSpark or an independent printer of your choice.

The programme costs £650, with payment plans available, and our first weekly Zoom session is on October 6. All the sessions are recorded too, so if you can’t make one live, you can catch up with the replay.

So, if you’ve had an idea for a book, could it be smaller and much more doable than you’ve been imagining?

If you’d like to know more about the programme, drop me a message and I’ll send you the details.

What would your Microbook be about? 😀📚

PS Anyone read the book I’m looking at in the pic? What did you think of it? 😉😀

Dolly Parton was a celebrated gay icon and passionate LGBTQ+ ally. In a clip, taken from an old interview she did with talk show host Larry King in 2016, Dolly says: “If you’re gay, you’re gay. If you’re straight, you’re straight. We are who we are. I don’t believe that we should criticise and judge other people. I think we should be accepting and loving. We are all God’s children. I keep saying, ‘Well, if you’re the fine Christian you think you are, why are you judging people?’ That’s God’s job. We’re not God.

“We’re not judges. We’re supposed to love one another, we’re not supposed to judge, and we’re not supposed to take vengeance on other people. That’s God’s job.”

She continued: “I’ve got too much to do on my own [without] trying to do God’s work, and you should be allowed to be how you are and who you are.”
