Engineering teams do not always need another full time designer.

More often than not, they need a little extra capacity to keep a project moving.

Deadlines get tighter, customer requirements change, drawing updates begin to stack up and suddenly a design team is juggling more work than it has time to complete.

Hiring a permanent employee is not always the right solution, particularly when the need is tied to a specific project or a temporary increase in workload.

Having access to additional engineering support can help teams maintain momentum, meet deadlines and focus on their highest priority work without creating long term overheads.

Warning Wednesday!

My warning of the week is a reminder to all that you shouldn’t sell a part, product or machine before your Engineers have designed it!

I get it, a show is coming up and you want to offer your customers something exciting and new, but your design team is still dealing with add-ons from last year.

The problem is what we imagine and what can be created are in reality two different things, especially when balancing design again the strict rules embedded into many industries.

Forward planning, design consultancy and proper client feedback create a much better foundation for design work and many less warranty issues in the future!

After more than 15 years in engineering design, one principle has remained consistently true.

The earlier a design issue is identified, the easier and less expensive it is to resolve.

It can be tempting to push ahead quickly when a project is moving at pace, but time invested at the beginning of a project is rarely wasted. Asking the right questions, reviewing concepts thoroughly and challenging assumptions early can prevent costly changes later.

A small design change during the concept stage might take minutes to implement. The same change discovered during production can lead to delays, rework, wasted materials and unnecessary expense.

Design reviews are not about finding fault. They are about reducing risk, improving quality and giving a project the best possible chance of success.

In my experience, some of the most valuable engineering work happens before the first part is manufactured. A well considered review at the start of a project will almost always save time, money and frustration later on.

Design Engineering is unique in that it blends together two different but important aspects. The first is the beautiful, the idea…the magic! Second is the ‘how’.

My career actually began in Marine Engineering and as a young 20 something just out of university it was my job to make boats function well and look pretty.

The delicate balance was making sure it met the rigorous standards set by the industry while meeting the even more rigorous expectations of the client.

How often have you imagined the design of something in your mind?

Perhaps it is curved edges, sharp lines or something seemingly impossible to create? It is my job to bring that reality to life for you, while ensuring that the magic you’ve created in your mind remains stable, secure and functional.
It is creating this very fine balance that keeps me loving the work that I do every day.

Behind every successful product is a huge amount of work that most people never see.

The finished product is often the result of countless conversations, reviews, design revisions and small improvements made throughout the development process.

Ideas evolve. Assumptions are challenged. Problems are discovered and solved. Designs are refined as new information becomes available.

In my experience, successful engineering is rarely about getting everything right first time. In fact, some of the most valuable lessons come from identifying what does not work and using that knowledge to improve the next iteration.

Good engineering is a continuous cycle of learning, reviewing and refining. Every revision is an opportunity to make something safer, more reliable, easier to manufacture or more cost effective.

The products that eventually reach production are often very different from the original concept, and that is usually a sign that the development process has done its job.

Progress does not come from perfection. It comes from a willingness to review, improve and keep moving forward.

Many engineering issues are blamed on poor design.

In reality, the root cause is often poor communication.

A design can be technically sound, but if the information needed to manufacture, assemble or inspect it is unclear, problems can quickly arise.

Over the years I have seen how much difference good documentation can make. Clear drawings, accurate specifications and well thought out engineering notes help remove ambiguity and give everyone involved confidence in what is being built.

From the design office to the workshop floor, clear communication saves time, reduces mistakes and helps projects run more smoothly.

Engineering drawings are not just a record of a design. They are a communication tool between design, manufacturing, purchasing and production.

The more clearly that information is communicated, the more likely the product is to be built correctly the first time.

In my experience, investing time in producing clear and accurate documentation almost always pays for itself later in the project.
