Time for a new chapter 🍊



After years as a Business Manager in schools, and several more building Virtual Satsuma as a VA and bookkeeping support service, I'm upping my game.



I've just started my Online Business Manager qualification with Thrive OBM Academy. Amanda Hyde-Pierce



The VA world has given me so much but it's changing. The market's more saturated, and changes to Access to Work funding mean the way I (and many VAs) have supported clients needs to evolve too. So I'm evolving with it.



I'll still be offering the services you know me for VA support and QuickBooks bookkeeping but I'm genuinely excited to be training as an OBM, and to bring those higher-level, strategic skills to clients in the future.

From £5 million budgets to "just" a VA? Let's clear this up.

"Isn't an OBM just an expensive VA?"

I get asked this a lot — so here's the actual difference, and a bit of why I can answer it from both sides.

For 10 years I was a School Business Manager. I converted schools into academies, managed £5 million budgets, and line managed up to 50 associate staff. Then I took a job that wasn't what I was told it would be — and it all went sideways.

So I rebuilt. Over the last decade I've grown Virtual Satsuma from the ground up — and I'm finally bringing that operational experience full circle by adding OBM to what I offer.

Here's what that distinction actually looks like:

A VA does the tasks you give them. "Send this email," "book this call," "update this spreadsheet" — done, brilliantly. A huge weight off your plate.

An OBM doesn't wait to be told what to do. They look at how your business runs, spot what's broken or missing, and fix it — without you having to spell it out.

A VA executes. An OBM owns the operations.

One needs instructions. The other needs a goal.

That second one only comes from actually having run the operations before — budgets, teams, the lot. Not just supported them.
