I was having a bit of a clear out at the weekend and found this picture of me from around 1996/97, so I was about 23/24. It was at the first stained glass place I worked and met my future husband (see second pic, so young and fresh faced!)
Anyway, I thought it would be a good excuse to introduce myself to our new followers. My name is Susanne (Sue, Susie, depending where or when you know me from), and I've been making stained glass windows for 30+ years. I set up my own studio in 1999, and my husband Michael joined me a couple of years later.
I chose the name Artemis as I've always been drawn to nature and organic, nature inspired designs. The goddess Artemis seemed to embody this.
We live and work in Staines (now Staines-upon-Thames, we've gone up in the world!) We're a stone's throw from the river which is lovely and we've made many a river inspired window over the years. We have two sons who aren't remotely interested in stained glass (which is probably a good thing 🤣)
We've worked on a huge variety of windows from the sublime to the ridiculous. Probably the weirdest being a dung beetle complete with dung (!) and the most prestigious being windows for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee at the Guildhall Windsor.
Michael also worked on the rose window at York Minster after the fire in 1986. It was one of his first jobs as a young apprentice. His funniest commission was a window for a farmer depicting his prize bull. On seeing the finished panel, he asked for the bull's balls to be made bigger!! (It was prize-winning after all🤣)
Well, that was all a bit long, but I'd say the sublime to the ridiculous and anywhere in between is a good place to be!
