It's World Heritage Day, and we'd just like to take a moment to appreciate just some of the fantastic heritage buildings and monuments in the UK that we've had the privilege of visiting.

From the Lewis Chess Set in Scotland to Stonehenge in Wiltshire, we are blessed to have so much history all around us. And not forgetting the excellent work of the people and organisations that look after them all.

Do you have a favourite heritage site?

Prehistoric or C19? The megalithic dolmen of Lanyon Quoit, Cornwall. Collapsing in a storm in 1815, the structure was re-erected in 1824, but not as high and without one of its damaged supports. In such instances, where the fabric and/or spaces of a site are considerably altered, its essential to consider context - specifically landscape here - which are much less likely to have changed and will still offer clues as to original use and significance.

The magnificent St. Michael's Mount, Cornwall as seen from Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens and apparently drifting in the sky. Probably a monastery from the C8 to the C11, it was gifted by Edward the Confessor to the Benedictine Order of Mont St. Michel, the island's larger French counterpart. Its castle dates to the C12 and the National Trust now manage a site very much geared toward tourism, keeping it absolutely pristine.

How we view ruins is very often removed from the facts of the matter and how such remains originally functioned. Largely, this doesn't matter as its all relative. We can know a church is a church but will find it hard to truly envisage its earlier use and users. Conversely, the flights of fancy, romance, melancholy or stories attached to a place - whilst unreal - are nevertheless satisfying dimensions to be savoured.

The mysterious megalithic Men An Tol, Cornwall. The name means simply 'holed stone', but further to that we know little. Antiquarian representations show a different configuration to that of today and its likely that the stones have been rearranged several times. Valuable lessons could be learned from this with respect to interpretation and/or presentation. Seahenge?

This is why I absolutely loved my first job as an archaeologist excavating Coventry's Benedictine priory. Not only for the excitement of the job, but also the camaraderie, being part of something much bigger than your own career, and the flow and mindfulness to be achieved in hard physical labour - but where the utmost concentration is still required. Marvellous to see it come to play in the battle for mental health.

Volunteers at Strata Florida Abbey in Wales find they enjoy the work and camaraderie

Great to see Worthing's Aquarena scheme finally proceeding. Although a long, uphill struggle in collaboration with ECE Planning and Roffey Homes, this will now add another layer of history to an intensively historic and deeply protected environment; but one that - against the odds - is appropriately and unapologetically of its time. We love to see old and new cheek by jowl. It's an authentic approach to design in the historic environment and only right.

A cute but definitely sinister door from the former gaol in Northgate Street, Warwick. The gaol burnt down in a fire of 1694, and the preserved door is now on Barrack Street. Not only the gaol but much of the town centre was rebuilt in the late C17 and again in the C18. Just goes to show that survivals are relatively random and that serendipity has an enormous part to play in the townscape we have preserved.

Ireland's National Heritage Week (last day Sunday, 25th) is coordinated by the country's Heritage Council and looks to build awareness and educate concerning heritage; thereby promoting its conservation and preservation. A quick look at what's at https://www.heritageweek.ie/ will show that the sheer breadth and depth of what actually constitutes heritage is astounding for its variety and the diverse mix of not only artefacts but also ideas and traditions. Lots to do and see and definitely worth a last minute look.
