🦸‍♂️ What have we been up to lately?

Safe to say it’s been a busy one at Heron Pest Solutions!

We’ve been up in lofts carrying out hygiene cleans, dealing with rats and mice, evicting wasps, tackling bed bugs and showing fleas the door. 🐀🐭🐝🪳

The best thing about this job is how versatile it is. One day you’re crawling around a loft covered in dust and droppings, the next you’re hunting down a wasp nest or dealing with some very unwelcome house guests!

No two days are the same and that’s exactly how we like it.

Chatting with other pest controllers locally, wasp season has not been anywhere near as intense as last year, however the nests we have been out to recently are getting pretty large!!

Wasps are necessary to our local eco system, they are great pollinators and also keep other insects at bay in the spring and summer months....but in August/September they get a bad wrap.....Why?

What happens in late August? Let us help you understand a wasps life in late summer.

✅The queen slows down egg laying, reducing larvae numbers
✅Workers have less to do with less larvae to look after and become restless
✅There are less natural food sources towards the end of August
✅The colony starts to die off which means behaviour becomes erratic and nest order collapses
✅Late Aug/Sept they are very erratic, starving and crave sugar.
✅So they end up in your pint, coke, orange juice & ice cream

What to do now!
✅Stay vigilant the nests are growing in roof spaces, facias, sheds, garages, play areas, underground in the garden etc
✅If you find a nest despite all the Facebook helpers that offer 'how to' advice DO NOT attempt to irradicate the nest yourself!
✅Although meaning well this can lead to multiple stings to you, neighbours, pets etc and the potential of anaphylactic shock. 1 sting hurts a bit, 20 stings is a world of pain and medical emergency!!
✅Call a professional they have the knowledge to tackle all eventualities and nest locations, the necessary protective clothing and nest treatments as not every nest is approached the same.

Well what a busy few weeks its been down at Heron Pest Solutions! Working towards new accreditations (watch this space) lots of training + certifications and audits to make sure we are the best we can be... working in the safest possible manner... full of knowledge and information for our customers to know they have confidence and are booking some real pros when they call us!!

As well as being busy with fleas, mice, carpet moths, wasps🐝, proofing work, flying kites down at the Welsh seaside stopping seagulls attacking golfers🦅😮, keeping camp sites and building sites proofed from Minnie and Mickey🐀 as well as making sure a few pubs are protected with comprehensive IPMs and full on b**r garden wasp protection!

The sun is out the sky is blue, wasps and ants are now annoying you!!

Recent call outs are telling us Wasp and Ant season is well underway.

Ants often have a much bigger 'base nest' and create 'satellite nests' closer to food sources etc.....Even queens have come out to have a look around please see the picture from a recent job for size perspective!!

Queen Wasps have been establishing colonies for a few months now check your sheds, playhouses, roof spaces and facias, garden borders, and garages Be careful and do not approach or attempt to treat a wasp nest, if it goes wrong it can go really wrong!!!

Do not try to treat any pests yourself. Only qualified and trained pest controllers can create a bespoke plan to purchase and administer the correct products to irradicate the pests safely.

Regarding insects, over the counter sprays and powders only kill what you can see not the nest or the lifecycle of the pests!

Where rodents are concerned low dose over the counter rodenticides often only feed the colony as resistance is easily built up within the rodent population.
Please be aware that when low dose rodenticides are effective they can also cause secondary poisoning of non target species such as birds of prey and pets.
We are trained to understand, minimise and irradicate the risks to non target species whilst maintaining effective pest control services.
