Introducing Textures of the Town Hall, a closer look at the intricate details that make this beautiful building.
First up: this stunning wall covering which spans across the grand corridors. This raised floral wallpaper is characteristic of Anaglypta, a Victorian embossed wallcovering patented in 1887 and widely used in public buildings, royal residences, and civic spaces of the era. Designed to be painted over and built to last, it was the Victorians' way of bringing craftsmanship and grandeur to large spaces.
Many original designs were lost when the presses were melted down during the war effort, making intact examples like this one a genuine piece of history.
This information is based on our own research rather than a verified record. So, if you know more, or work in conservation or heritage, we'd love to hear from you and learn more about the features of our wonderful building.
