How do you protect temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals across an increasingly complex global supply chain while also meeting sustainability goals?

From long transit times and customs delays to seasonal extremes and multiple transport methods, maintaining 2–8°C and 15–25°C temperature ranges across global supply chains requires careful planning.

Our latest blog explores how passive temperature-controlled packaging can help protect product integrity, support cold chain compliance and reduce the risk of temperature excursions, while helping organisations work towards their sustainability goals.

We absolutely love this reuse!

Sue has given her Woolcool a very special second life by turning it into a cosy bed for her 14-year-old senior dog. 🐶

As the days start to get cooler, the natural insulating properties of wool make it perfect for adding an extra layer of warmth and comfort, especially for older pets who appreciate somewhere snug to curl up.

Have you found a creative way to reuse your Woolcool? We’d love to see it!

What does it mean to be a B Corp? 🌍

We are B Corp certified and proud to be the first packaging company of our kind in the UK to achieve certification. 🐑

B Corp looks at how a business impacts its people, communities and the planet, holding businesses to high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.

The certification process was rigorous and showed us something important – we’re far from perfect! Being a B Corp isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about being accountable, continually improving and staying true to our mission of using natural materials to change the world.

Wool is naturally breathable, but why does that matter?

Wool’s unique fibre structure allows it to absorb, manage and release moisture vapour, while maintaining the tiny air pockets that give it its insulating properties.

For Woolcool® packaging, this helps to:

💧 Manage moisture and condensation
🌡️ Support stable temperatures
📦 Protect temperature-sensitive products
🐑 Maintain effective insulation

It’s one of the many natural properties that makes wool such an effective insulating material. At Woolcool®, we’ve spent decades understanding and harnessing these properties to create packaging that performs, naturally.

What is lanolin?

Ever noticed that distinctive ‘woolly’ scent of natural wool? Lanolin plays a part in that!

Lanolin is a natural wax produced by a sheep’s skin that coats its wool fibres, providing some pretty clever benefits:

💧 Helps repel water and keeps the fleece from becoming completely saturated.
🌧️ Helps protect against the elements and changing weather.
⛅ Creates a natural barrier that helps protect the sheep’s skin.
🐑 Coats and protects the wool fibres, helping keep the fleece in good condition.

At Woolcool®, our wool is washed and scoured to remove dirt and much of the lanolin, without harsh chemical treatments, so you may still notice that familiar, natural ‘woolly’ scent. Lanolin is just one small part of an incredibly clever natural system, from managing moisture to protecting against the elements, a sheep’s fleece has evolved to perform, naturally.

We love seeing all the creative ways people give their Woolcool® a second life and this World Honey Bee Day we had to bring light to one of our favourite reuses!

Did you know that some beekeepers reuse their Woolcool wool in their bee houses and hives? 🐝

Thanks to wool’s natural insulating properties, it can help provide an extra layer of insulation within suitable hive setups, helping to buffer changes in temperature throughout the seasons.

This World Honey Bee Day, we’re celebrating the bees, the beekeepers who care for them, and all the clever ways our Woolcool® community continues to . 🐝♻️

Have you reused your Woolcool in or around a beehive? We’d love to see it!

If you can't reuse or recycle your Woolcool®, before you think about returning it to us, could someone else give it another life?

If you can’t reuse your wool at home, there are plenty of places that may be able to put it to good use; from local animal shelters and allotments to community gardens, schools and craft groups. 🌱🐾 Not only does this give natures smart fibre a second life, but it also removes the carbon footprint from returning it.

Swipe to see some inspiration, and remember to always check with an organisation before donating.

Have you found a creative way to reuse or donate your Woolcool? We'd love to hear about it, message us, tag us or use ♻️

The Woolcool® story begins, fittingly, on the farm.

In 2002, packaging expert Angela Morris was working with the National Trust when she was given a challenge: to find a natural and sustainable chilled packaging solution that would help their farmers deliver fresh produce directly to customers.

By this point, Angela already had many years of packaging experience across an incredible variety of sectors. As a packaging consultant and advisor, Angela worked closely with businesses to introduce innovative packaging solutions that protected their products and helped them succeed in the marketplace.

Angela had her eureka moment when she realised that wool, a material traditionally associated with keeping us warm, was just as effective at keeping things cool.

Its natural insulating and temperature-regulating properties offered an exciting opportunity to rethink chilled packaging, while wool itself could be reused, recycled and composted at the end of its useful life.

Angela had discovered what we now proudly call Nature’s Smart Fibre.

She developed a wool-insulated box for the National Trust’s farmers and, with the challenge solved, returned to her day job as a packaging consultant.

But the story didn't end there...

Word began to spread about this innovative new way of keeping products cool. Interest grew, and so did demand.

What followed was six years of development, testing, trialling and refining, as Angela worked to turn that original idea into a commercially viable, high-performance packaging solution.

Behind it all was a belief that remains at the heart of Woolcool® today: sustainability and performance shouldn't have to compete with one another.

By 2009, Angela was ready and The Wool Packaging Company opened for business, and the Woolcool® brand was born.

What began with one challenge on a farm has grown into decades of research, innovation and a determination to go beyond the expected.

We’re proud to be certified with an EcoVadis Silver award, but what does that actually mean?

EcoVadis assesses businesses across key areas of sustainability, from environmental impact and ethics to labour and human rights and sustainable procurement. Achieving this puts us at an 85+ percentile ranking, placing Woolcool among the Top 15% of companies assessed by EcoVadis.

For Woolcool®, achieving a Silver Medal is an important recognition of the work happening across our whole business not just the sustainable packaging solutions we create.

But for us, it’s not about collecting a medal and considering the job done, sustainability is an ongoing journey, and independent assessments like EcoVadis help us understand where we’re performing well and where we can continue to improve.

Swipe through to learn a little more about EcoVadis, what Silver means and why it matters to us. 🐑
