Flystrike

As the weather becomes hotter, it’s important to keep a close eye on your rabbit. Flystrike is commonly seen in summer and prevention is better than a cure.

What is flystrike ?

It happens when flies lay their eggs on your rabbit which then hatch out into maggots. These can then eat into your rabbit's flesh which can cause death in a short amount of time.

If you find maggots on your rabbit don’t delay, get in touch with us as soon as possible. If it doesn’t delay coming to see us, try to pick out the maggots as best you can with tweezers. Flystrike is serious and very painful but, if treated quickly enough, rabbits can make a full recovery.

How can I prevent it ?

Check your rabbit's bottom every day in summer.

Keep their bottom clean and dry and free from faeces and urine.

Keep your rabbit's environment clean so flies are not attracted.

Apply rearguard if your rabbit is at risk.

If your rabbit has a wound keep it clean and dry.

If your rabbit is stiff or obese it should lose weight so they are able to squat and clean themselves.

If you are worried your rabbit is at risk from flystrike please give us a call straight away.

FULL/Part time RVN position 🩺

*** Crofts Veterinary Centre, BRECHIN DD9 7AF ***

An excellent opportunity for a small animal RVN (full or part time) to join our supportive team in an independent mixed animal practice (with small animal bias) in Brechin, Angus.

There is no on call and only 1 in 4 Saturday mornings, so there will be plenty of time to explore the wonderful surrounding countryside.

Experience is preferred as historically the practice has only required one nurse as part of the team supported by ACAs and nursing students. A newly qualified nurse would also be welcome as long as they are comfortable with a wide range of responsibilities.

We would prefer a clinical coach, or someone willing to become one, to mentor and support our current lovely student who will be starting the course in Autumn 2022.

CPD is encouraged and funded.

The position, working 3-5 days per week, covers a wide variety of jobs including:
- Monitoring anaesthetics/general theatreduties
- Dealing with inpatients and day patients
- Administering medication
- Blood sampling/in house lab work
- X-raying imaging and ultrasound
- Carrying out nurse clinics along with admits and discharges
- General cleaning duties
- Reception and client care
- Assisting vet during surgical and non-surgical procedures

Salary negotiable depending on experience.

For more information or to apply, please email [email protected] for the attention of David McLaren 😎
