David Newton Associates is an architectural practice based near the cotswold town of Stroud in Gloucestershire. Our core strengths lie in the analysis, conservative repair and sensitive adaptation of historic buildings but we also delight in the creative design of unique new structures in both historic and contemporary settings. All our work is guided by a thoroughly evolved brief and by the natur

al and built context of the site to create successful projects. Sustainability in its widest sense influences how we operate as a business and what we design.

Planning and Listed Building Consent has just been obtained for alterations and extension to this cottage set in a beautiful combe in the Stroud valleys. Following an unfavourable pre-app response, the client decided to press ahead with proposals, supported by a Statements document which thoroughly examined the building and its setting and the impact the proposals might have on the heritage asset. The earth-sheltered new structure is very simple and discrete but will significantly improve the ground floor accommodation.

Work to improve the access through the medieval passageway from Cirencester's marketplace to the beautiful churchyard of St John Baptist is nearly complete. Much of the work is below ground, but we have also replaced uneven concrete paving with new stone, and re-set the existing stone flags to eliminate trip hazards and make the surface easier and safer for all. Work also includes re-lighting the route by re-electrifying the existing traditional wall and post lanterns, and installing new lights on a wall bracket and gate overthrow to provide better lighting throughout. Before and after images. Better ones to follow!

Before and after of the tower arch at SS Teulon's St Giles parish church, Uley. The former organ chamber screen which was relocated into the tower arch in the early C20, is now re-sited in the tower base as a frontal to a store cupboard. The architect's original open arrangement now allows the tower base window to again provide light into the middle of the church.

Work to improve access to Minchinhampton Market House's undercroft is nearing completion with the reinstatement of railings, some altered, some new, which now provide removeable central sections allowing easy access to the re-flagged surface -using as much of the old flags as possible. Two municipal benches were removed and the original railing design reinstated, while seating is now provided on both elevations, one now close to the bus stop. Within minutes of the temporary barriers being removed, the seats were in use.

Following some minor repairs to the timber roof structure, the nave roof is receiving its new coat of Forest Marble Cotswold stone slates. These are hooked over oak battens in the traditional manner but using metal rather than oak pegs.

We are pleased to be supporting St John the Baptist, Cirencester to develop their plans for the improved safety and access through the medieval pathway around the south east corner of the church. It provides public access from the marketplace to the churchyard beyond and is one of those special places that modernity has largely left alone. Improvements to the paving surface, lighting and entranceway are being considered.
