Reeds and Reedbeds!

A quintessential sight on many ponds across the UK, a plant that is synonymous with the word and hard not to think of when they are mentioned.

Reedbeds provide great ecosystem services such as water filtration and oxygenation. This is why reedbeds have been used for effluent treatment since 1986 – we see them on many sites from wildlife reserves to timber processing plants. However, if reedbeds filter our water systems then why is it so important to maintain them, surely the more they grow the better?

It’s all about striking the balance between services gained from the beds themselves and the biodiversity of the water systems in question. If the pond is covered with a bed of Common Reeds (Phragmites australis) the water filtration may be effective but other issues will arise such as:

🦆reduced habitat availability for animal species residing within and around the pond.

🌱a monoculture can reduce light availability to the pond, causing other surface or subsurface plants to stop growing and further reducing the biodiversity within the water system.

🌿dead plant material from the reeds can end up covering the area around the pond if not managed which further drives down the capacity of the pond to support other flora and fauna.

These issues are resolved through effective clearance and management which we at JPR have the skills to do. With the expertise and knowledge of our team, we work to balance the needs of the environment with the need for the treatment system to work effectively – we ensure the ponds retain the maximum capacity for the biodiversity they can support.
