WALK OF SHAME

We all know that a good walk can do wonders for your mental wellbeing, releasing endorphins that help reduce stress and anxiety. This time of the year when it is so cold, the last thing we feel we want to do is go for a walk - but I find it truly energising.

When walking on Monday, I was horrified to see so much rubbish in our hedgerows and so today went armed with a large bin liner and gloves and collected half a bag of rubbish from a two-mile walk.

It is shameful to see the packaging from takeaway food, crisp packets, cigarette boxes, cans and bottles discarded in this way. Why do the few have to spoil if for the many?

Meet Tom….

Tom is an owner/manager of a rapidly growing business who needs to undertake a multitude of different tasks key to its development with new opportunities needing to be explored.
This leaves very little time to deal with the day to day management of his business. It is important that he maintains a professional image and his business is running smoothly, but he is constantly interrupted by emails and the phone never stops ringing.

Everyone seems to want a response immediately, but he only has one pair of hands! As a freelance PA/Secretary I could assist with the calls and emails together with the day to day administration, thereby maintaining continuity and avoiding the chance of missing that new business opportunity when Tom is unavailable.

Tom would much rather be growing his business than dealing with the necessary paperwork required, but Tom does not feel in a position financially to take someone on full-time; as a consequence, he is often found working late into the evening at his office or taking work home with him which affects his social life and can mean missing out on quality time with his family before the children go to bed.

I could help Tom as he does not need to employ someone on a full-time basis!

Tom is my ideal client.

Having committed to getting better, on social media, on the 5-day challenge with Anna Geary and Anita Baldwin Marketing - more customers, higher value, simple marketing my challenge today is to write something about myself, not something I am particularly comfortable with, so here goes…

I have lived in Leicestershire all my life and love living in a village. A year ago, having looked at my work/life balance, I made the decision to work for myself providing secretarial and administrative support to small businesses, transferring all the skills I have gained over the last 40 years working as a legal secretary, particularly confidentiality and attention to detail.

What I love about my career choice, is that I now have so much variety. I have been able to help a local builder with data entry/reconciliation and general administration and was approached to write Christmas cards and birthday cards for an advisor, freeing up her valuable time to continue building her business. I believe handwritten Christmas and birthday cards are much nicer to receive than the formal printed cards, adding a personal touch for clients.

I now have more flexibility in my life enabling me to rediscover my love of gardening (removing five conifers from our garden this summer, which were long over-due for removal). I also enjoy walking and baking and believe me when you live in a village there is always a need for cakes to be made for one event or another!

I also enjoy watching rugby and cricket, which is just as well as my husband is very fond of his sport programmes, and particularly enjoyed watching Leicester City win 9-0 at the weekend, together with the gripping game of Rugby when England beat the All Blacks! Well done to both teams!

‘WALK THE WALK’ – Don’t just ‘Talk the Talk’

Mental Health Awareness is very relevant, and much discussed at present, both in the workplace and on social media with many celebrities opening up about their personal experiences of mental health issues, particularly sportsmen competing at such a high level.

So many of us are our own worst enemy, heaping pressure on ourselves to be the best we can be, not wishing to let fellow work colleagues, team or family members down. How much better would it be, if instead of simply paying “lip service” to those suffering with anxiety (however big or small these are perceived to be) friends, colleagues and employers would “walk the walk” and not simply "talk the talk".

Budgets can hold employers back for providing cover during periods of absence, which means the remaining staff have their workload increased, unless the work is left for the returning employee. Yet how many hours are lost in a working week by employees not working to their full potential if they are feeling under-valued, bemoaning to fellow colleagues how over-worked and stressed they are feeling.

How much better do we all work when we are on top of our game, feeling a valued member of the team? If employees felt more valued and supported during these periods of stress and anxiety the employers would see a greater upturn in the output of work as less time would be spent discussing these issues.

We all look forward with great anticipation to our holidays with the chance to relax and escape the pressures of daily work, however it counts for nothing if when returning to work you are faced with an even larger workload then previously as it could not be covered during your absence. How many times have you heard colleagues bewailing their holidays seems but a distance memory within 24 hours of being back at work? Would it not be so much better if support is put in place during this time, so that upon their return they do not face a huge backlog of work?

So come on everybody let us listen to our colleagues, make them feel valued, and “walk the walk” and not simply “talk the talk”.
