Hi all, been a bit quiet here lately as I’m busy with jobs and also setting up with in our home town, Nailsworth near Stroud. We will be in the beautiful space from May 6th.

We’re popping up in May for 20 days. Head on over there for more info. It’s a bit of an experiment, an art and design led reading room with books donated (and to be returned) from the local community. We’ll also have a bunch of creative sessions and workshops too. But plenty of time to just come in and browse the books, be surprised and be curious.

This image seemed to resonate. A backdrop I painted for a talk between Bishop Rachel and barrister Tom Godfrey about what the justice system is designed to achieve and where prison fits. The image is all about balance, a theme I come back to often in my work, in that a big system is made of many parts, big and small that have to co exist to balance and support the whole.

Thanks Lenny for the pic.

Just found this in the archive (new website trawl) and thought it summed up the day. Blue, blue sky and the promise of Spring.

Go fill your lungs with fresh air and breathe it all in.

A step through some of the stages from a sketch to a finished backdrop. I did this sketch on my iPad, but often they’re little paintings, or oil pastels or just pencil thumbnails with notes.

The most important thing at this stage is to keep it loose and flexible, so I’m not replicating something exactly when I go big as that can make it all a bit stiff and contrived, but also with enough information that I don’t have to think too much and freeze up when I get to the big paper! A fine balance. I also tray and work out colours before I start, as stopping and thinking too much about this can interrupt the flow. But inevitably I make some new colours along the way.

I also haven’t included the email back and forth discussion of ideas and then the picture research, in this case mostly supplied by and her wonderful set of lichen and moss images. And the logistical element of getting 3m backdrop to the venue and setup for the event. The practical bits.

Emmi used the backdrop at a talk about her creative well-being handbook and panel event. Thank you Emmi!

Just me and my new favourite size of paper.

My friend Dave said at the beginning of 2025 to ‘Go big Bowers’ so I did. And now a 3x3 metre piece of paper feels as approachable as a piece of A4. Just takes a bit more time to paint.

And it’s fun. Thanks Dave.

Mini cards for mini festive greetings.

Send to an old friend (still time for slightly cheaper second class stamps) or give one to your neighbour, dog walker, kids teacher, anyone! It will never not be welcome.

We just had a beautiful card from studio neighbours and I had a lovely chat with Eva. Post delivered ByHand is the best.

Cards available in my shop via 👆Link in Bio.
I have reduced postage cost and will hand deliver local folks in the the Stroud area.

🎄Mini cards!🎄

Spread small amounts of joy this Christmas.

Buy some and send one to an old friend, give one to the neighbours that you only say a quick hello to, give one to the lovely woman on the check out in Morrisons. Give one to the postman.

They’re only small, so you don’t have to write loads. Remember how nice it is to receive a card, so be a good egg and send some too.

There are two packs of 8 to choose from and I have reduced the postage cost to send out as it was a lot and I want to encourage you to send cards this year!

🔗🎄I hate to say it but LINK IN BIO to my shop.

I’m all wrapped up in wool in our chilly studio to tell you about a drop in workshop I’m doing this Saturday for the Earth Magic exhibition currently on in Stroud.

In relation to the work of we’ll be making our own versions of Norwegian Primstavs or calendar sticks for the year ahead.

It’ll be a chance to think about what we’d like next year to hold for us, and also have some creative time in the beautiful garden room at the museum.

All welcome for some drawing, cutting and sticking!

Thanks to curator of Earth Magic for getting me involved.

Hello! Hi. It’s been a while since I last posted.
No real reason other than being quite busy and falling off the Insta train. Anyway, back on now. Toot toot. 🚂The usual sporadic service will be back up and running.

Here are some super inspiring sheets of A4 paper painted black which is how much of my smaller scale work starts, to be cut up scanned and coloured. These are destined for a new public realm project I’m working on over the next few weeks.

What is anyone else up to?

Had a fantastic few days creating a window mural for the pavilion in their beautiful garden.

I spent a day creating drawn snapshots which I stitched into long abstract sections, a cut and paste version of the garden, which then informed the painting. It’s an impression, not a representation and I enjoyed looking at the many shapes and colours that create the beautiful patchwork of plants.

Much more to think about having done this, I learnt a lot, and had lots of great conversations with visitors along the way.

Anyway, if you want to go see it, it’ll be up until August 25th. And the museum is brilliant, a busy creative hub with super friendly staff in a park full of big shady trees. A total win for the summer holidays.

(We also had a very fun collage workshop day, but that’s another post.)
