Why does Gen Z always want to know why?

Where previous generations might simply have accepted “those are the rules”, Sarah has found that younger employees often want to understand the reason behind them.

And that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.

Taking a little more time to explain the why can help people understand, engage and see things differently.

A great moment from the latest episode of Mind the Generation Gap.

A new face at Oculus HR! 👋

We’re very happy to welcome Kat, our new HR Business Partner, to the team.

Kat joins us with 13 years’ experience in generalist HR, working across a variety of sectors within large organisations. More recently, she moved into Operations Management, supporting the growth and development of a start-up in the energy sector.

Now she’s back in the world of HR and will be working directly with our clients, providing practical, commercially focused advice and support across a range of industries.

One of the things that attracted Kat to Oculus was the variety that comes with working with different businesses, as well as the opportunity to help organisations develop and strengthen their HR practices.

And when she’s not talking all things HR, you’ll usually find her at the gym, spending time with her family or planning her next trip (because who doesn’t love a holiday? 😉).

We’re delighted to have you on board, Kat. Welcome to the team! 💙

41% is a pretty worrying number.

According to an Acas-commissioned YouGov poll, two in five employers aren’t aware of changes to the law around preventing sexual harassment at work.

From 30 October 2026, the existing duty on employers will be strengthened, requiring them to take all reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment. There will also be new responsibilities around harassment of employees by third parties, such as customers and clients.

The important part here is that this is about prevention.
Having a policy is important, but employers also need to think practically about the risks within their own workplace, how concerns are reported, whether managers know how to respond and what proactive steps they’re taking to create a safe working environment.

October might feel a little way off, but now is the time to review what you already have in place and address any gaps.

If you’re unsure what the changes mean for your business or whether you’re prepared, speak to the Oculus HR team. 💙

A warm welcome, introductions to the team and showing someone where the kettle is are all part of a great first day.

But good onboarding doesn’t stop there.

The first few weeks and months are when new starters are learning what their role really looks like, what’s expected of them and how things work within your organisation.

That’s why a consistent onboarding process matters.

Clear objectives. Regular check-ins. Early feedback. Proper probation reviews. And opportunities to raise questions before small uncertainties become bigger issues.

Done well, onboarding gives a new employee the best possible chance to settle in and succeed, while giving their manager a clear structure to support them along the way.

And with changes to unfair dismissal rights coming in January 2027, having a robust process in place is becoming even more important.

If your onboarding process could do with a refresh, we’ve brought together practical policies, templates and guidance in our Onboarding Policy Pack & Procedure Templates, available through the Oculus HR Shop. 💙

Who does your HR person turn to when they need some support?

For managers who have taken on HR responsibilities, or junior and mid-level HR professionals developing their careers, there can be a lot to navigate.

Employee relations. Performance. Policies and processes. Difficult conversations. And sometimes situations where there isn’t an obvious right answer.

Having an experienced HR professional to talk things through with can make a huge difference.

Our HR mentoring provides personalised, one-to-one support, giving people a confidential space to ask questions, work through real situations and build their confidence and capability over time. The programme can cover everything from onboarding and employee relations to performance management, succession planning and wider people challenges.

It’s not about giving someone all the answers.

It’s about helping them develop the knowledge and confidence to make better decisions themselves.

If there’s someone within your business who could benefit from having an experienced HR professional in their corner, we’d love to have a chat. 💙

Running a business doesn’t always leave much time for thinking about the business.

When you’re dealing with recruitment, performance, employee relations, growth and everything else that comes with managing a team, people planning can easily become reactive.

But your people strategy should support where your business is going, not just where it is today.

This autumn, our HR Director Sally Smith is offering a limited number of dedicated People Strategy Days for business owners, CEOs, and leadership teams who want the space to step away from the day-to-day and look at the bigger picture.

From future structure and skills gaps to leadership development, growth and organisational change, you’ll spend the day working with Sally to create a practical people roadmap aligned with your wider business goals.

We have just four dates available across September, October and November.

If taking a day out of the business to work on your people strategy for 2027 sounds useful, get in touch with Sally or the Oculus HR team. 💙

There’s a strange thing that happens in a lot of workplaces.

Someone is brilliant at their job, so they get promoted into management. Then they’re suddenly expected to know how to lead a team, manage performance, give feedback and navigate difficult conversations.

But becoming a manager doesn’t automatically give you those skills.

They need to be learned, practised and developed.

That’s exactly what the Oculus HR Leadership Academy is designed to do. It’s practical leadership development built around the situations managers actually face at work, giving them tools and confidence they can put into practice straight away.

Because supporting your managers doesn’t just help them grow. It has an impact on the people they manage, the culture you create and ultimately the wider business. 💙

Gen Z often gets a lot of attention in workplace conversations.
But perhaps we’re asking the wrong question.

Instead of focusing on why younger employees might seem different, it can be more helpful to look at the environment we’re creating for them.

Are expectations clear?
Are managers equipped to lead?
Are people getting regular feedback and opportunities to grow?

The truth is, the things that help Gen Z succeed are often the same things that help every employee succeed.

Strong leadership, open communication, and a culture where people feel supported never go out of style.

Helping managers build these skills is exactly why leadership development is such an important investment. It’s also why it’s at the heart of so much of the work we do with our clients. 💙

The best partnerships are built over time.

For the past five years, we’ve had the privilege of supporting this client through the day-to-day people challenges that come with running a business, providing practical advice, guidance and peace of mind along the way.

Receiving feedback like this means so much to our team.

Thank you for your continued trust and for taking the time to share your experience of working with Oculus HR 💙

Not everyone steps into their first management role with the confidence or skills to lead people.

And that’s completely normal.

Many managers are promoted because they’re excellent at what they do. But managing people requires a different set of skills—communicating effectively, having difficult conversations, giving feedback, supporting wellbeing and helping others perform at their best.

Those skills aren’t something people simply pick up over time. They develop through the right support, practical learning and real-world experience.

That’s exactly why we created the Oculus HR Leadership Academy.

It’s designed to help managers build the confidence and capability to tackle the everyday challenges of leading people, with practical tools they can take back into the workplace straight away.

Because when you invest in your managers, you’re investing in your people, your culture and the future of your business. 💙
