Val recently captured these stunning aerial photographs of Alnwick at sunset. From above, archaeologists can spot cropmarks, earthworks and historic landscapes that are often invisible from the ground. Sunrise and sunset are the perfect time for aerial photography, with long shadows revealing details hidden in the midday sun.

These images capture Alnwick’s historic heart, with Alnwick Castle standing prominently against the spectacular Northumberland landscape.

AB Heritage has been managing archaeological monitoring and recording within a Scheduled Monument, where recent works uncovered a circular kiln.

The remains include around 1m of limestone walling on a limestone base, with a single surviving course of brickwork around the top.

The current theory is that the kiln served the local estate, possibly producing plant pots - fragments of which were found in the backfill.

With site recording works completed by AB Heritage in March this year, Chevet Grange nr. Wakefield was a technically demanding but highly rewarding project for Elli and Martha. They really enjoyed working on this fascinating project and AB Heritage are pleased to contribute to a deeper understanding of the site's historic development, and its significance within West Yorkshire's rich rural heritage.

Whilst on a recent site visit, Elli captured these glorious photos of Liverpool Cricket Club. Founded in 1807, the club is one of the oldest cricket clubs in the world. These images capture the magnificent character of this historic site.

While out on a recent site visit, Peter captured these photographs of this unusual cottage dating back to 1621.

This octagonal timber-framed and plastered building sits on a brick plinth, complete with a circular thatched roof and red brick chimney stack. Its design is similar to the cottages found on Canvey Island in Kent, across the Thames

We love the story behind its distinctive shape - with no corners inside the cottage, there was supposedly nowhere for evil spirits to hide!

Laura, our Outreach Manager, recently captured these photographs while walking part of the Pennine Way.

High Force is one of the most dramatic natural landmarks in the North Pennines, with a story stretching back millions of years. The waterfall exists because of a hard band of rock called the Whin Sill, formed around 295 million years ago. Over time, the River Tees eroded the softer rock beneath it, creating the powerful 21-metre drop we see today.

People have travelled through Upper Teesdale for thousands of years, and the name “Force” comes from the Old Norse foss, meaning waterfall - a reminder of Viking influence in the region. By the 18th and 19th centuries, High Force had become a famous beauty spot, attracting visitors including the artist J.M.W. Turner.

Today it remains one of the North Pennines’ most iconic landscapes.
