This important ( often called a ) was found by a collector in a provincial auction. The maker Claude Du Chesne, an important Huguenot Maker Clockmakers Company 1693 – 1730.

It had suffered badly - several inches were lost from the bottom of the case, and the surface was completely missing from the sides, and extremely damaged in other places.

The of , (a European version of finishes, particularly those originating from China). was in high fashion at the time and this is a typical European design of the early 18th century.

After the substantial carcass repairs, and my colleague servicing the the surface was sympathetically.

Research was undertaken, and along with "witness marks” still visible through the recently applied black paint the design was re-created, using shellac and gold powders in the traditional way.

The final images show the clock installed and running beautifully.

A clock, and brass veneer on an oak ground with mounts -always a challenging prospect to restore.

After the careful removal, cleaning and re-laying of the veneer, replacing the losses of the with a synthetic equivalent I make myself (hawksbill turtle is an endangered species so we
substitute for a faux material).

The engraved brass veneer is treated with garlic in the traditional manner before being glued with hot , finally the are refitted after careful cleaning.

Finishing with a little beeswax, it's ready to be reunited with the
