From Swansea to Sydney! 🇬🇧🇦🇺

After a long journey from the UK, I arrived in Sydney today. A walk around the beautiful Sydney Harbour, with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge in the background, was a great way to begin my Australian visit.

But this trip is about much more than visiting a new country.

Over the coming week, I will meet growers, distributors, agri-input businesses, and potential strategic partners as part of the Innovate UK Global Business Innovation Programme, delivered with support from UK Business Growth and (Face to Face).

Having spent more than 30 years working in biological crop protection and plant health, I have seen how much scientific innovation has advanced. But one challenge remains: turning promising technologies into practical, commercially viable solutions that growers can trust and use.

That is exactly what we are working to achieve at Group.

We have developed a portfolio of microbial biopesticides, biostimulants, biofertilisers and advanced formulation and delivery technologies. We are now focused on scaling these innovations internationally through strong distribution, licensing, and technology partnerships.

Australia has a sophisticated agricultural industry, innovative growers, and some challenging crop-protection conditions. I see real opportunities for collaboration, but I am equally keen to listen, learn and understand what the market needs.

Biological crop protection is advancing. But how much of it actually reaches the target?

This week at Horticultural Trades Association FutureGrow 2026, I spoke with ornamental growers and horticulture professionals about one of biological crop protection's biggest challenges: turning promising science into reliable performance in commercial growing environments.

My central message was simple:

Biological efficacy is not just about the active ingredient. It also depends on formulation, application and delivery.

I shared some of our work at Bionema, including:

🔬 Incapsulex®, our microencapsulation technology. In a UK strawberry trial, Metarhizium formulated with Incapsulex® gave 97.5% control of western flower thrips, compared with 58% for the same biological without formulation.

💧 Adhesulex™, our next-generation surfactant technology. It uses biodegradable, biocompatible polymer surfactants designed to deliver biologicals.

🛡️ NemaGen®, our beneficial nematode technology for managing economically important insect pests.

The most valuable part of the day was the discussion with growers. Their questions were practical:
- How do we apply these products?
- Will they work under commercial nursery conditions?
- Can they fit into existing spray and irrigation programmes?
- What evidence supports their performance?

These are exactly the questions biological technology developers need to answer.

The next stage of biological crop protection will not be decided by laboratory results. It will be decided by consistency, grower confidence, ease of application and measurable commercial results.

$12 trillion.

That is the approximate annual hidden cost of the global agrifood system.

According to FAO, around $8.1 trillion, roughly 70%, is linked to unhealthy dietary patterns and related non-communicable diseases.

That number should change how we think about agriculture.

For decades, we have measured farming through yield, cost per hectare, productivity and market price.

But there is a bigger question:

What value does agriculture create from soil to human health?

The chain starts long before food reaches the supermarket shelf.

Soil → crop → food → health

That is why the next phase of biological agriculture must go beyond simply saying:

“We use fewer chemicals.”

Biologicals are not the whole answer.

But they can intervene at one of the earliest points in the food value chain, influencing soil function, nutrient-use efficiency, crop resilience and how food is produced.

The next challenge is proof.

Can we measure what these interventions do not only to yield, but also to crop quality, nutrient composition, environmental impact and the value created further down the food chain?

When we can demonstrate that connection with evidence, biological agriculture is no longer viewed simply as an alternative input category.

It becomes part of a much bigger conversation about the future of food.

Health starts long before the plate.
It starts in the soil.

The harder question is not whether agriculture influences health.

It is a matter of whether we are prepared to measure it.
