Every day is a school day right?

In Health & Safety we can't afford to stop learning. Above and beyond the need for CPD to maintain Association Memberships, the field of Health & Safety never stands still and if we don't keep pace then we fall behind. We are forever reminding our clients of the need to review what they are doing, to maintain & improve knowledge and to follow the PDCA cycle, naturally as Health & Safety Professionals we must do the same our selves - we lead by example.

I've added to my knowledge with a formal qualification every year since I passed my NEBOSH General Certificate in 2020, so for this years learning I have looked at where we can add further benefit to our customers, where we had previously relied on outsources services or proffesionals to provide specialist knowledge when assisting our clients. I concluded that further learning in the field of Fire Safety was the most relevant option.

So the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety has been booked. Having been unable to book with my usual provider until October, I have taken the plunge and booked a 'Virtual Classroom' course with Phoenix Health & Safety in April. Reviews and feed back seem positive so it will be interesting to compare the approach of different providers.

Here at Anzen we have a saying “Safety isn’t expensive, its priceless”. It’s become so well known in my network that people often quote it back to me or introduce me with it.
But what do we actually mean?
Safety in the workplace helps protects the invaluable, the things we can’t put a price on. Your health, your mobility, your freedom, your income and ultimately your life. There is no amount of money you would accept in exchange for giving up one of those – that would be a ridiculous proposal, wouldn’t it? and yet employees and employers put those invaluable things at risk every day to save a few minutes or a few quid.
So when you’re next only popping out to the warehouse to grab a box and don’t take the time to put on your safety shoes, climb a ladder without securing it or picking up that load that you know is really too heavy for one person but there is no one else around to help, maybe ask yourself:
If your partner, son or daughter were doing that at their place of work – or worse, were expected to do it by their employer – just to save a few minutes, would you be happy?
Would you partner, son or daughter be happy if they knew you were doing it? I seriously doubt it, and yet you’ll happily do it yourself without a second thought.
We’re passionate about educating our clients so that they can manage their own Health & Safety, that way we can leave them to it and go and help some one else.
At Anzen we help employers create safe places of work, so that employees go home healthy every day – Why? Because “Safety isn’t expensive, its priceless”.
Give me a call or drop me a line and let’s have a chat about how I can help you to do just that no cost, no obligation, just a chat - coffees on you.

Every day is a school day- right?

Last years challenge was completing my NEBOSH Diploma after 2 1/2 year - job done. But that's in the past and in Health & Safety nothing sits still for long (except me writing reports).
I am constantly badgering my clients about training, are they keeping on top of it, could they do more, what about this new course (see last weeks post about H&S L3 Award now available). Well here at Anzen we practice what we preach, this year I planned to complete my Nebosh Certificate in Construction Management and thanks to a natty little discount code (-30%!!) from RRC International its now booked. Roll on March and 2 weeks tied to my desk (yeay) 😒 .

This will allow me to offer a greater level of service to our construction clients and work with a wider field in that arena. We already have one Architects Practice interested in assisting them with CDM work.

What are your training goals for 2025? (and can we help 😉 )

Electrical Safety

There are 2 significant stalwarts of electrical safety in the workplace. The EICR and PAT. Why are these important and are your up to date?
Now the Safety Aware amongst you will be thinking – what about Risk Assessment. Yes, RAs are also important but they are not unique to Electrical Safety and they do not actually make thing safe, they define your controls and the EICR and PAT are 2 fundamental controls.
EICR – Electrical Installation Condition Report. Simply put, this looks are your buildings electrical infrastructure – the fixed wiring, distribution panels, switches, and sockets. It will highlight any concerns with your installation and allow you to make the necessary repairs before a failure or potentially a fire occurs. Generally, an EICR is valid for 5 years but in some circumstances, this may be 3 years.
PAT – Portable Appliance Testing. This is a process by which the safety of everything you connect to the above-mentioned electrical infrastructure is also safe. There are various categories of equipment and scenarios of use which need to be considered. These can lead to a frequency of testing anywhere between every 3 months (eg equipment used on a building site) and 5 years (eg desk-based IT equipment). In general, there is an additional ‘thorough inspection’ by a competent person required at half of the determined test interval. The requirements will be assessed by Risk Assessment, and this will determine the frequency at which PAT is conducted.
While there's no specific law mandating either PAT or an EICR for commercial properties, it is considered as the accepted method to meet your legal obligations under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. You customers, employees and other professionals who may work at your premises will recognise this and be assured of their safety, similarly an inspector will likely take these at face value as being suitable and sufficient. If you chose a different method you need to be confident that you can prove, both an inspector and potentially in a court of law, that your method is equally suitable.
Remember that which ever method you use, you have a responsibility to check the service provider is competent – eg suitably qualified, and those who are so will be more than happy to provide you with evidence such as qualification certificates or membership of professional bodies. If you are in any doubt, we are more that happy to assist you.
Safety isn’t expensive, its priceless.

Incident Reporting.

Do you have a robust procedure for the reporting of incidents? We all know we should have an accident book and that all accidents should be recorded but do you truly understand why its ‘all accidents’ and not just the serious or statutory reportable ones that we record? How about the other incidents – those where no one is actually hurt or where there was close call.

The reason is one as mundane as statistics – for every 300 incidents with no injury, there are 29 with minor injuries and 1 with a major injury – or worse.

If we record, and just as importantly review, all the minor incidents and near misses and we act to prevent them, especially those that are regular or repeats then we stand a very good chance of preventing that one major. If you have 150 incidents in the last year and act on the data then its likely you won’t have 150 this year and thus statistically you will have prevented that major event. If you do nothing, this year will be a repeat and the likelihood of that major? Well, it doesn’t bare thinking about.

Now I know that an oversimplification but even those 29 minors are worth preventing and that’s 1 in 10 of all your incidents.

Remember injuries cost you working time, they cost moral, they cost money and ultimately, they can cost you your business.

If you’d like to know more about accident and incident reporting and prevention, then we are here ready to help, give Marc a call on 07563 492268 or drop a line to [email protected]
