The theory behind the blue glow in a reactor — the Cherenkov Effect — was developed by Igor Tamm, a Nobel Laureate whose birthday is today!
Born in 1895, Tamm devoted his early research to crystal-optics and the quantum theory of diffused light in solid bodies. One of his most significant scientific achievements was his role in developing the theoretical interpretation of the Cherenkov effect, or Cherenkov radiation, which explained the occurrence of a blue glow when particles, most often electrons, move through an insulator, like water, faster than the speed of light in that medium. This work earned him a share of the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics.
