Fletcher had no official power in prison - but everyone listened to him. He couldn't give orders, but he could persuade, negotiate, and influence. He got things done without any authority whatsoever.
The best leaders in your business might not have "manager" in their job title.
Fletcher understood something most leaders miss; authority comes from respect, not from your position on the org chart. And that led him to act as a Mentor to others, having a positive impact in what was a tough environment.
We see it constantly - the project manager everyone ignores despite their title, and the junior engineer whose opinion carries weight because they've earned trust.
In matrix organisations, cross-functional projects, or any situation where you need people to do things they don't have to do - Fletcher's skills matter more than your job title.
The future of leadership isn't command and control. It's influence without authority. Persuasion, negotiation, relationship-building, mentoring, coaching and earning respect one interaction at a time.
If you can't get things done without pulling rank, you're not leading - you're just holding a title.
Question: Could you still lead your team if you didn't have the authority to fire them?
