Fake reviews are now a criminal offence in the UK — and the crackdown has teeth.
The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2025 makes it illegal to pay for, write, or host fake reviews. Businesses that have been gaming the system are now exposed to Trading Standards action, and the reputational hit if caught is far worse than any short-term star rating bump.
