In a recent survey we conducted 80% of smaller businesses weren't currently separating food waste.

This suggests many businesses may need to make changes before the March 2027 Simpler Recycling deadline.

One of the more interesting findings from our recent business survey was that 78% of respondents said operating sustainably is important to their business.

However, 82% also said they don't currently have recycling or carbon targets in place.

Although this was a relatively small survey of businesses across the South West, it highlights an interesting challenge.

Many organisations clearly want to operate more sustainably, but turning good intentions into measurable action isn't always straightforward.

Whether it's understanding recycling performance, improving waste segregation or preparing for Simpler Recycling, having clear objectives can make a real difference.

Our recent survey of a small number of South West businesses suggests that many organisations are still getting to grips with the new requirements.

Earlier this year, we asked group of businesses across the South West about their understanding of Simpler Recycling and how they are approaching the new legislation. One finding stood out: only 44% of respondents said they felt moderately or very familiar with the requirements.

What was also interesting is that this applied to businesses that are already compliant as well as those who will need to be compliant by the end of March 2027.

Clearly there is a job to be done for both the Government and the waste management industry to help customers understand and interpret the rules as they apply to their business.
