The simple answer? More often than most facilities currently inspect them.

🔦 When the Vessel Starts Glowing in All the Wrong Places… 🔦

Carried out Fluorescent Penetrant Testing (FPT) on a product vessel today — and let’s just say the vessel decided to highlight its own problems for us. 😅

The image shows penetrant applied internally making its way through the defect path and running down one of the vessel legs under UV light.

Not exactly the kind of “flow test” you want to see on process equipment…

This is why FPT remains such a valuable NDT method:

✅ Detects surface-breaking defects
✅ Helps identify through-wall flaws and crack paths
✅ Provides clear visual indications under UV inspection
✅ Can reveal issues long before catastrophic failure occurs

In this case, the fluorescent indication suggested a direct pathway from the internal surface through to the support structure — meaning further investigation and repairs were definitely added to the to-do list.

It’s always impressive how something invisible in normal lighting suddenly becomes impossible to ignore under UV.
