Are your performance metrics truly aligned to your business goals?

If not, they could be undermining customer loyalty and your brand.

You may know that I am partial to a drop of wine! As such, I was delighted to receive an event invitation from a wine supplier, who I had bought from before, and was keen to buy from again.

I won’t go into the litany of things that occurred – but safe to say – I was not made to feel welcome.

On the day, I was just after one wine in particular. This meant I didn’t hit their minimum order quantities, so I enquired whether I could buy it online instead. I was informed, fairly gruffly, that if I looked online, it was out of stock.

I can’t say with absolute certainty but strongly suspect they were being rewarded on event sales numbers, with no, or very little, alignment to ensure a consistent experience and promote customer loyalty.

Will I complain – probably not. Will I return and buy again – probably not.

The moral of this story is that when it goes wrong, people don’t complain they just walk away, so make sure your performance metrics match your business goals from the start.

Are you feeling like a “Weeble”?

“Weebles wobble but don’t fall down!” That maybe so, but it’s exhausting!

Surprises always happen and business owners have to be extraordinarily resilient. In any business emergency an “all hands to the deck” approach and great teamwork can get a business out of all sorts of trouble. This can be rewarding and exhilarating or simply provide a sense of relief that “phew we got over that one” – but if those emergencies become regular events, then energy and enthusiasm to keep upright, can at best wane.

Finding time to work “on” your business and ensure it is not only organised in the right way but has strategies and plans in place to weather future storms, is essential. This is crucial for building future success and a lifestyle that is more joyful and less exhausting, than consistently being a “Weeble”!

Are you finding time for you?

It’s so easy as a business owner to not be kind to yourself and prioritise time for you.

Feeling energised and motivated each day, is not always easy, especially if all routes in your business only lead to you.

For me walking my lovely dog Candy each morning, reminds me that I’m where I want to be and why I’m doing what I’m doing, which energises me for the day ahead. It helps me noodle through how to solve tricky issues. It’s my time. It’s where I’m often at my most creative. Whatever my thoughts and whatever the weather, everything is better after a good dog walk.

Whatever energises and motivates you – give yourself permission to take that time, enjoy it and to make it a priority.

Top Tip: block the time out in your diary to ensure you keep that time free for you.

Is this what your staff are asking themselves?

Job vacancies are at a record high and employers who want to attract and retain staff are under pressure to lift wages – but is that sufficient?

An exodus of over-50s left the workforce during the COVID pandemic – lockdown changing the way they saw life – recognising the stress that they had been under and asking themselves “why am I doing this?” and “I am not enjoying it anymore - valuing their lifestyle in ways not done before.

Creating or refreshing your Vision and Culture statements and ensuring they reflect the organisation you want to be will help ensure your business is the one people “crave” to work for.

Are you creating a fabulous experience?

And is it a consistent one? Did you know that it takes 40 positive reviews to undo the damage of just 1 negative review? With that in mind your customer experience should be at the top of your to do list.

Employees clearly loving what they do, caring about the service and experience they create and the environment they work in, is not easy to achieve. Making it a consistent experience, whoever the customer interacts with, is even harder, but when it happens the effect is simply magic.

Happily, one establishment that has got this spot on is Candlelight Inn – I love great food and wine and recently took my lovely step-mum there for dinner. We had been there before for drinks and loved the experience. We commented on how the pub made us feel, relaxed, happy, but couldn’t put it down to just one thing…and although not quite round the corner for me, some 40min drive, we booked in for dinner.

The food was wonderful and the attention and service spot on – everyone we encountered, made us feel noticed, looked after, and special.

We will of course return not just for good food and wine but knowing we will get a wonderful experience – simply joyous.
