It’s happening on Monday, 8 June!

This promises to be an excellent event, organised by me in partnership with our hosts Thorlux Lighting.

We’re looking forward to welcoming members to our upcoming BHSEA factory visit at Thorlux Lighting on Monday 8th June 2026 - a fantastic opportunity to see engineering excellence, innovation, and safety culture in action.

During the visit, members will gain insight into Thorlux’s approach to modern manufacturing, automation, product testing, and workplace design. The tour will also highlight how strong safety principles are embedded across their operations, offering practical examples that can be applied in a wide range of workplaces.

Factory visits are a brilliant way for our community to learn from industry leaders, explore real‑world applications of good safety practice, and connect with peers who share a commitment to safer, healthier working environments.

Today at the apiary Shropshire Beekeepers Association I was lucky enough to get involved in removing queen cells from a hive and placing them into small nucleus colonies (mini mating hives used for raising new queens).

These tiny colonies give the developing queen a safe, controlled environment, with a small group of worker bees to care for and protect her. We then placed them in the dark to allow the queen to continue developing, grow, and eventually hatch.

I even captured a video of the incredible humming sound from the bees—such an amazing thing to hear.

We also checked over another hive while searching for the queen. There was plenty of larvae, eggs, and beautifully covered brood… and then—wow—Glyn spotted her! He carefully caught the queen, marked and clipped her, and then gently returned her to the hive.

The bees were so well behaved, and it was just a lovely day all round with wonderful people. I feel very lucky to be part of such a great group.
