It’s just been announced that the government will have the power to ration electricity to air source heat pumps during times of high demand. Let that sink in. When it’s freezing cold and people need heat the most, the system can turn your smart heat pump down or off to “balance the grid.”
Installers are being pushed hard to fit these things. The government is throwing money at training installers so they can install them, even though they’re not suitable for the vast majority of UK homes - especially older properties that make up most of our housing stock - To make them work properly you’re often looking at huge remedial jobs: new radiators, pipework upgrades, insulation and electrical work. I’ve seen bills hit £20k plus just to get the same level of warmth people were getting from a £3k boiler swap.
Most of the lads I know don’t want to fit them. We’ve seen the disappointment on customers’ faces when their electricity bills rocket and the house still doesn’t feel as warm as it did on gas. These systems need to be designed and installed properly to work well. A lot aren’t. And when I’m the one saying that - someone who’s actually qualified to fit them - people should listen.
I sat the official course myself. Three days in a classroom, heat loss calculations, one-hour exam. Walked out none the wiser. I did some voluntary extra training afterwards and it was better, but I’m still yet to fit one. Not because I can’t - because for most of the customers asking about them, it’s not the right solution.
Even on the commercial side it’s nonsense. I’ve worked on jobs where a full conversion from gas was quoted at around £1m, with a 30-year payback… on equipment that’s only expected to last about 15 years. Who in their right mind signs up for that?
And now, on top of everything else, they’re building in the ability for energy companies … under government direction- to limit power to your heat pump when needed. Scary times ahead.

Aston Villa FC boilers running at outside temperature of 0degrees and the entire training ground is a toasty 20degrees from a 13% running capacity… about the same as a normal combi in a normal house when having a shower… that’s insane!!!

On paper, nothing changed:
➡️ Two 250kW boilers out
➡️ Two new 250kW boilers in

But how they actually run now is a completely different story.

The old boilers were sitting there burning around 120kW just to keep the place comfortable.
The new setup? The screen is showing 13% load on a 250kW boiler — that’s 32.5kW — and the training ground is warmer and more stable than it ever was before. Reaching temperature quicker and maintaining that temperature throughout the entire day.

To put that into perspective:
32.5kW is roughly what you’d expect from a good three-bedroom house combi boiler…
Yet here it is comfortably heating a Premier League football club’s training facility. 🤯

The boilers are now set up in a proper cascade / duty rotation, meaning:
• Only one boiler runs at a time
• They automatically rotate as lead
• No more both boilers firing flat out together

That results in:
✅ Far better efficiency
✅ Reduced wear and tear
✅ Smoother, more consistent temperatures

And the big wins:
🔥 Lower gas usage
💷 Lower running costs
🌍 Significant carbon reduction

All without sacrificing comfort — if anything, the building feels better than ever.

When you see 13% load on a commercial boiler serving a site like this, that’s what modern, correctly designed and commissioned plant can achieve.

Insane results that will save the club thousands and thousands every year! Again - this is going to cost around £60 per day to run… the old boilers were more than 3x that. Ridiculous savings.
