Small Woods Association is a national charity based at the Green Wood Centre in the Ironbridge Gorge. Charity no. 1081874

We promote sustainable woodland management techniques across the whole of the country, techniques that are better for wildlife and biodiversity, as well as for the timber and woodland products they 'grow'. Small Woods Association helps anyone looking to manage woods with advic

e and networking to guarantee the sustainable future of Britain's rich tapestry of woodlands and the valuable role they play in our economic, social and environmental landscape. People can become members through our website, or of course, we are happy to run through membership benefits on 01952 432769. Small Woods Association delivers many innovative and engaging woodland projects across the UK, including the Woodland Initiatives Network, the National Coppice Restoration Project, Heartwoods, Coed Lleol, forest schools, volunteering and social forestry projects in Hereford, Shropshire and Telford. At our Shropshire centre we run recommended courses and events, ranging from coracle-making to skills for sustainable woodland management. The Green Wood Centre promotes all things woody and wonderful from our beautiful and sustainable site nestled in the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. There is also an on-site cafe and a conference room that is available for other Shropshire organisations to hire. We provide services to woodland owners, practitioners and producers, and we signpost anyone interested in local woods to local groups that encourage access, make products, and provide services or training. We provide input to policy forums, and lobby at all levels to promote the wellbeing of small woodlands and all those who own, manage or work in them. Small Woods Association publishes a quarterly magazine for our diverse range of members plus a twice-yearly practitioners' magazine for those with a strong professional interest.

Our next Woodland Hour takes place on Wednesday 17 June, 5-6pm.

Woodland Hour is one of the many benefits available to Small Woods members, offering the chance to hear from experts, learn new skills and connect with others interested in the management and enjoyment of woodlands.

This month, we're joined by Martin Edwards, Head of Deer & Woodland Management at the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, for a practical discussion exploring how deer can shape the future of a woodland, what impacts they can have on woodland health, and how they can be managed effectively.

Not yet a member? Join Small Woods today to access The Woodland Hour and a range of other member benefits (link in bio).

We'll then be taking a break from Woodland Hour over the summer. If there are topics you'd like us to explore when we return, we'd love to hear from you. Email [email protected] with your suggestions.

🌿 Pobl y Prosiectau | People of the Projects 🌿

This week we're shining a light on Kara Moses at Feral Futures , another of our
brilliant Coed Lleol Small Woods Activity Leaders in Mid Wales.

We're incredibly lucky to have Kara involved with our projects. Alongside her work with Coed Lleol Small Woods, she is widely recognised for her work in wildlife tracking, foraging, woodland management and nature connection, teaching and facilitating for organisations including the Centre for Alternative Technology, Schumacher College and St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation & Peace.

Kara describes her work as helping people reconnect with the skills our ancestors relied on for thousands of generations- skills such as tracking, foraging and understanding the natural world around us. What makes her approach particularly distinctive is her emphasis on relationship, reciprocity and ecological understanding, encouraging people to see themselves as part of nature rather than separate from it.

As well as teaching and facilitating, Kara spends the winter months restoring ancient woodlands and brings a huge depth of practical experience, ecological knowledge and thoughtful reflection to everything she does.

We're delighted that she shares some of that experience with Coed Lleol Small Woods participants here in Mid Wales on our Coed Lleol Awyr Iach programmes.

We’re delighted to welcome Mary of Mary Eluned Baskets to the Green Wood Centre’s growing programme of craft tutors.

Mary will be teaching our Make an Oval Shoulder Basket course this November, introducing participants to the principles of working with willow and a range of traditional basketry techniques. Over two days, you'll learn how to weave a French-style base, use scalloming to attach uprights, and complete a beautiful oval shoulder basket finished with leather or vegan handles.

Working from her workshop in Lightmoor, overlooking the Ironbridge Gorge, Mary creates contemporary baskets from willow, rush and locally foraged materials. Her work is inspired by traditional basketry and reflects both her English and Welsh heritage. Alongside her own making practice, Mary also works for Heritage Crafts and is a familiar face on the River Severn, where she enjoys spending time in coracles.

We’re looking forward to having Mary share her skills and experience at the Green Wood Centre and welcoming more people into the world of basketry.

🌿 Pobl y Prosiectau | People of the Projects 🌿

This National Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating Peter Farrelly Primal Forest- someone whose journey perfectly captures the power of what Coed Lleol Small Woods is all about!

Peter first came to Coed Lleol Small Woods as a participant. Over the years he became a regular member of the group, then a volunteer, and more recently an Assistant Leader supporting sessions across Carmarthenshire.

Today, Peter supports a wide range of sessions and projects, helping others experience the same sense of connection and belonging that first brought him to Coed Lleol Small Woods.

Carmarthenshire Project Officer Becky shared:

"Peter has been part of the Carmarthenshire Coed Lleol story almost as long as I have. He came along to one of our very first sessions and has been with us ever since.

He joined us as a regular group member, then became a Volunteer and has more recently become an Assistant Leader. Over that time his passion for the outdoors has been a constant, as has his fun and warmth. He is a Bushcrafter and skilled Whittler, always attentive to the needs of the group, and he is a fantastic photographer.

On behalf of the Coed Lleol Carmarthenshire family, thank you for everything you have done for us over the years."

Thank you, Peter, and thank you to all the volunteers who help make Coed Lleol Small Woods projects possible.
