Today is International 3D Printing Day! At Printotype, we celebrate how this technology transforms ideas into reality, from rapid prototyping to low-volume manufacturing. Any idea what on earth this AI generated spinning reel of 3d printed parts is supposed to be? We havent! How has 3D printing inspired your projects? We’re proud to unveil our latest heritage and interpretation project at the breathtaking Lake Vyrnwy Arboretum!

Working closely with the client and stakeholders, we designed and delivered a pair of striking new welcome signs alongside a family of leaf-shaped corten steel markers, each highlighting the most remarkable trees in this nationally important collection.

🛠️ From digital design to laser and waterjet cutting, we crafted every detail with durability and elegance in mind. Over time, these signs will develop a rich patina of orange and red hues, blending beautifully with the natural surroundings.

Big shoutout to Edwards for his invaluable support on-site from installation to project coordination, his energy and expertise made this one a joy to deliver.

Something's taking root… 🌱

We’ve been working on something rather special deep in the heart of the Welsh landscape, where design meets woodland, and stories grow from steel.

Here’s a little glimpse from our install…
Full reveal coming very soon. 🌳

Michelangelo's Sculptures Reimagined in 3D Prints -

"Michelangelo Imperfect" at Denmark's National Gallery (SMK) brings nearly all of Michelangelo’s sculptures together through a fusion of 3D printing and traditional casting.

Crafted by Factum Arte, these replicas allow unprecedented access to the Renaissance master's works. Matthias Wivel, the show’s curator, understands how important replicas are to our historical and cultural understanding.

“It was a way of gathering and making accessible works of art that weren’t accessible to the general public, either because they were far away or because you couldn’t see them together,” Wivel explained. “There’s been this sort of fetishism of authenticity around original objects (beginning) in the 20th century.”

We love this this melding of historical artistry with modern technology, reflecting our own enthusiasm for innovative material applications in art. This exhibition sets great a precedent for the preservation of cultural heritage through technology. If your interested in digitally preserving your artefacts, Printotype can help you today, to preserve into tomorrow.

Cipherling Transforms Espionage with 3D Printing!

Meet Cipherling, the 3D-printed robotic receiver that cracks coded messages from around the world. Developed by Tim Burrell-Saward and Charlie Bruce, this device taps into number stations, interpreting anything from Morse code to music. Just set it off, and it will decypher and crack any hidden message within an audio track.
We at Printotype love this style of modern engineering, and Cipherling showcases a fascinating fusion of art, technology, and espionage nostalgia, bringing the intrigue of cold war spy tools into the digital age.

Intrigued by the blend of historical espionage and modern technology? Reach out to explore how we can integrate innovative 3D printing solutions into your projects!

New drop: BPF – Black Pudding Filament 🍳🧵
Ever wondered what would happen if you crossed blood donation waste with 3D printing and a full English breakfast?

We did.
And the answer is: BPF™.

✨ 100% biodegradable
✨ Surprisingly edible
✨ Smells like brunch for 36 hours
✨ Prints your wildest pastry dreams

Treat your mates to a 3D-printed cake, then casually tell them it's made from medically sterilised blood. 😈

Cannibalism meets commercialism meets consumer FDM.
Just another day at Printotype.

💡 But seriously...
APRIL FOOLS!
We’re not printing blood sausages (yet). But hey – it’s good to challenge the norm, get people talking, and imagine the weirder side of sustainable manufacturing.

Tag someone who'd actually eat this. 😅

From Past to Present: Attingham Park's New Venture into Archaeological Research!

Attingham Park is set to become an even more significant National Trust asset with plans for a new Archaeological Research Centre. This addition aims to enhance the visitor experience by enabling public participation in archaeological digs and increasing engagement with the site's rich history.

At Printotype, we're thrilled to see such innovative use of local heritage sites right in our neighborhood, and we're eager to contribute creatively to similar projects. Perhaps, using 3D printing or one of the many other manufacturing processes we are masters of, we could create something truly out-of-this-world for similar sites!

Stuttgart’s 3D-Printed Mycelium Additive Innovation

Mycelium is weird. Its also ripe with potential -
The University of Stuttgart's 2023 m{AI}celium project explores the potential of 3D-printed mycelium-based composites (MBCs) in architectural design.
This study focuses on leveraging data-driven methods to optimize the use of mycelium as a building material, aiming to enhance design practices by aligning them more closely with the material's growth and properties.

We dont have access to research journals, so id love to hear more if you have read the full paper!

Are you excited by the blend of biology and architecture, or printing in some weird and funky stuff? Contact Printotype to discuss how we can incorporate groundbreaking materials into your next project!

Beaver-built Barricades: How Nature Finished What Bureaucracy Couldn't

In a delightful twist of nature meeting necessity, beavers in the Czech Republic have completed a government dam project, initially stalled, by naturally constructing it themselves. This serendipitous event not only saved nearly £1 million but also showcased the efficacy of these "ecosystem engineers" in creating sustainable environments.

After 7 YEARS of studies and reviews, paperwork averse beavers were able to complete the project in just over TWO DAYS!

At Printotype, we are inspired by such natural ingenuity combined with traditional techniques. If you're intrigued by blending organic processes with innovative design, let's collaborate to explore sustainable solutions in construction and beyond! - Beavers not included*

String Theory in Art: Hepworth's Sculptures

Barbara Hepworth's string sculptures may be familiar to some of you with a long standing installation present for decades on the wall of John Lewis. However it was just the tip of a vast iceberg of artistic works, long kept private, which will now be accessible to the public in a London gallery, showcasing her innovative use of materials like twine and metal.
Hepworth's work merges traditional sculpture with dynamic elements, echoing the principles of 'Tensegrity'. We see immense potential in taking inspiration from these amazing artworks and potentially adapting these techniques with 3D printing for futuristic sculptures that perhaps even Hepworth would not have imagined.!
