This week, while working on a client's garden, they asked me to prune the lavender.

Leaving the remaining flowers might mean that it's not such a quick job. But it does leave a much-needed source of nectar for pollinators at this late stage in the season. 🦋🪻🐝
I can easily cut back those flower stems at a later stage.

I'm working with some new homeowners at the moment who have recently taken on 3 acres of land. They really want to improve it for wildlife.
I am helping them to restore their hay meadows and a (very) overgrown pond. Watch this space for further updates...

National Pine Marten Day today 😊

🐾 Did you know? It's National Pine Marten Day!

Pine martens are one of our rarest carnivores. Agile and charismatic, they play an important role in keeping our woodlands healthy and balanced. They feast on squirrels, birds, insects, fruit and nuts and sleep in old tree cavities, rock crevices, or even abandoned buildings.

This September is Marten Month, led by the Vincent Wildlife Trust.

Spring is well underway. As the days get longer, and the sun shines a bit more, we start to get out into our gardens. Notice what's growing and coming back to life.

Did you see 'My Garden of a Thousand Bees' last night?
In the UK we are, traditionally, a nation of naturalists. This programme was the work of a true naturalist: noticing, watching, and filming the many different species of bees in his own back garden.
We got to see stunning behaviour and physiological adaptations.
Even if you're not a fully fledged 'bee nerd' like me, watch it. It will still be on BBC iPlayer 🤓

If you have a pond on your land, keep an eye out for the first appearance of frog spawn. Then upload the details here... 🐸

It’s so exciting to see your sightings start to come in! 🗺️

This year's first record was of frog spawn in puddles in west Cornwall on 2nd December. Since then, we've had a number of records, with more dots now appearing further east and north.

The PondNet Spawn Survey maps sightings of Common Frog and Common Toad spawn across the UK to help monitor how amphibians use different types of waterbodies to breed. The records are submitted to the Record Pool, the UK’s dataset on reptiles and amphibians, run by Amphibian and Reptile Groups of the UK - ARG UK and Amphibian and Reptile Conservation.
