Right, it's been two months since The Employment Rights Act 2025 landed, described as the biggest shake-up to UK employment law in a generation — its well and truly here, with more changes still rolling out into late 2026 and 2027.

For those of us in commercial cleaning (where early starts, shift patterns, and part-time contracts are just Tuesday), it's been quite the adjustment.

Here's a quick recap of what's changed or coming:

⚖️ Paternity and unpaid parental leave are now day-one rights — no waiting period needed
🔄 "Fire and rehire" practices face much stricter regulation — possibly banned altogether
📋 The unfair dismissal cap gets removed in January 2027 (fun times ahead for HR teams 😅)

We've been busy updating contracts, revisiting policies, and having lots of very grown-up conversations with our HR advisor.

Genuinely curious — how are other business owners finding it? Manageable tweak, or full-on admin avalanche?

Some contracts are commercially important. Others just feel like the perfect fit.

Today, we believe we’ve partnered with Mark’s ideal client, an independent coffee shop chain. ☕

Anyone who knows Mark will know he possesses an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of the best coffee spots across Norfolk & Suffolk, so I’m fairly confident these “routine site visits” may become slightly more frequent than strictly necessary.

Joking aside, we’re genuinely excited to support another growing independent business and look forward to building a strong long-term partnership together.

This week we commenced services at two schools supporting young people where mainstream education is not always the best fit. Whilst both projects matter enormously, one in particular means a great deal to me personally as we are providing the service free of charge.

Running a business inevitably involves conversations around budgets, margins, targets, and growth. But I’ve always believed business should also have a place within the community it operates. Sometimes giving back is just the right thing to do.

Over the years I’ve been fortunate that people have supported me, opened doors, and shown kindness at moments it mattered. If we are in a position to help others, even in a small way, I think we have a responsibility to do so.

I’m incredibly proud of the team for embracing that mindset and understanding that not every decision is driven purely by profit. Sometimes the value created cannot be measured on the balance sheet.

Not a day we particularly look forward to, but today we completed our annual Health & Safety audit with our external consultant.

Pleasing to say all policies, procedures and training were thoroughly checked and verified, and we passed with flying colours.

This outcome supports the continued maintenance of our ISO 9001 accreditation and reflects the hard work and commitment across the business.
