Winter Health Matters: Supporting People Affected by Blood Cancer

Winter brings additional challenges for people living with blood cancer. With weakened immune systems increasing vulnerability to infections, access to vaccinations can play a vital role in protecting their health.

This autumn, Leukaemia Care is raising awareness of COVID-19, flu and RSV vaccinations, helping patients understand their eligibility and access essential protection. Many individuals with blood cancer qualify for free COVID-19 and flu vaccines, while certain age groups may also be eligible for RSV vaccination.

Every patient’s circumstances are different. Those undergoing treatment are encouraged to seek guidance from their healthcare teams to ensure vaccinations are appropriately timed. Early access to COVID-19 treatments may also help prevent serious complications.

Kidney Care UK is expanding its partnership with the UK’s gas distribution networks, delivering £1 million of support to approximately 25,000 people living with chronic kidney disease.

The programme offers much more than financial assistance. People can access specialist benefits guidance, money and energy advice, face-to-face support and the Kidney Care UK Support Line, helping ease pressures caused by rising household costs and fuel poverty. With further investment, Kidney Care UK can continue providing specialist welfare, financial and energy guidance, face-to-face assistance and support through its dedicated helpline.

Turning Generous Funding into Meaningful Experiences

Exciting news is taking to the airwaves! Cherry Trees UK has been awarded an incredible £60,000 grant from BBC Children in Need, helping to create more enriching experiences for the children and young people in its care.

Awarded following a competitive application process, the grant will be delivered as £20,000 annually over three years. The funding will help provide exciting activities while also supporting the cost of a staff member who can help children access and participate in these experiences.

The exciting announcement even reached the airwaves, with CEO Sally Davies joining local breakfast radio shows to discuss how the grant will broaden opportunities for the children in Cherry Trees’ care.

Anaphylaxis Awareness Week 2026: Belonging Starts With Understanding

Inclusion can make all the difference. For people living with serious allergies, everyday moments such as eating at school, attending a work event or enjoying a family holiday can bring additional challenges.

From 1–7 October, Anaphylaxis UK will share trustworthy, evidence-based resources, personal stories and podcasts, helping challenge misinformation and give communities the knowledge to offer meaningful support. Following last year’s campaign, which reached more than 230,000 people online, this year aims to inspire even more conversations.

Take part in , download the AAW26 Toolkit, organise an allergy-safe workplace activity, or encourage schools to start important conversations about inclusion.

Urology Awareness Month: Shining a Light on Urostomy Care

September’s Urology Awareness Month highlights conditions affecting the urinary system, including cancers of the kidneys, bladder and prostate. For some people, treatment can result in a urostomy, where urine leaves the body through a stoma and is collected in a specialist pouch.

Experiences are helping shape research. Colostomy UK, alongside Rachel Jury and John McGrath, asked its support community about healthcare professionals’ knowledge of urostomies. Among 52 responses, 50 reported that limited knowledge was a common experience, highlighting the need for greater education and awareness.

Around 10,000 people in the UK are estimated to live with a urostomy. Although healthcare professionals may encounter relatively few cases, maintaining greater awareness can help patients feel understood and appropriately supported.

Behind the excitement of a fireworks display, many animals can experience overwhelming fear. For horses, sudden explosions may trigger panic, creating a serious risk of injury and considerable stress.

Remus Horse Sanctuary welcomes the UK Government’s public consultation on proposed changes to fireworks regulations. Among the measures being considered are reducing the maximum permitted noise level for consumer fireworks and restricting the public sale of additional high-risk fireworks.

This is an important opportunity for change. While quieter fireworks cannot prevent every incident, they could help reduce the fear experienced by horses, pets, livestock, wildlife, and vulnerable people.

A Legacy Inspired by the Dogs Who Started It All

Every remarkable journey starts somewhere, and Luosko German Shepherd Dog Rescue’s began not with plans for a rescue, but with Stuart, Dru and two beloved family dogs, Lucca and Oscar. Through companionship, loss and love, these dogs inspired values of patience, loyalty and understanding that would eventually shape LUOSKO.

After Lucca sadly passed away at only four years old, Riley joined the family so Oscar would not be alone. Luna followed, eventually becoming the familiar face of LUOSKO. Then came Timmy. An accident at eight months old left him with a severely deformed jaw, changing the future originally planned for him. Stuart and Dru looked beyond his disability and simply saw a dog deserving love and belonging.

Together, these dogs helped shape the values behind LUOSKO’s work today.

Closing the Gap in Cholesterol Care

Cardiovascular disease remains one of England’s leading causes of death, while millions of people are living with cholesterol levels above recommended guidelines. Improving cholesterol management could prevent avoidable cardiovascular events while delivering significant benefits for the NHS and wider economy.

Now, HEART UK is pushing for change. A new position paper from the HEART UK CVD Collaborative has compared NICE cholesterol guidelines with international standards, finding opportunities for the UK to adopt clearer and more ambitious recommendations.

The recommendations offer a clearer path forward. These include lowering thresholds for lipid-lowering treatments, introducing LDL-C targets according to cardiovascular risk and strengthening guidance for both primary and secondary prevention.

AFK Beach 2026: From the Sand to Lasting Change

From the first serve to the final point, AFK Beach 2026 proved what can happen when a committed community comes together. Returning at SideOut in Leyton, the much-loved tournament welcomed eight teams for a day filled with competition, teamwork and fundraising.

Since beginning in 2009, AFK - Working With Disability Beach has grown into a remarkable fundraising tradition. This year, eight returning corporate teams competed, including EY Parthenon, who have supported the event every year since its launch. Young people supported by AFK also joined the action, both on court and through paid roles within the event team.

Together, supporters raised an outstanding £13,000, pushing AFK Beach’s lifetime fundraising total beyond £750,000. These funds help AFK continue creating opportunities for disabled and neurodivergent children and young people.
