A recent sand replacement project at Bulford Ranges on Salisbury Plain Training Area shows how circular economy principles can reduce waste while supporting the continued operation of essential Defence training facilities.

Stop butts are large banks of sand designed to capture bullets safely during live firing. They require specialist maintenance, including the removal and replacement of contaminated sand, to ensure ranges remain safe and ready for military use.

Working with social enterprise, P Cubed Projects, the project team took a recovery focused approach to the work:

🍃Over 1,000 tonnes of contaminated sand were treated and recovered
🍃98% of the material was diverted from landfill
🍃The recovered material can now be reused within the construction industry
🍃The work was completed ahead of schedule, allowing planned military training to continue

James Dean, Senior Project Manager, said, “Projects like this demonstrate that environmental responsibility and operational delivery can go hand in hand. By working closely with specialist partners and prioritising material recovery, we substantially reduce waste to landfill while completing the work ahead of schedule. It is a strong example of what collaboration, careful planning and sustainable thinking can achieve.”

The project also highlights the valuable contribution that social enterprises and specialist suppliers make across the Defence supply chain.

Thank you to P Cubed Projects and everyone involved in delivering the work safely, efficiently and sustainably.

We are pleased to announce that all six regions of the UK Defence Training Estate (DTE) have received either a Gold or Silver award in the 2025 / 2026 Utilities Savings Challenge.

This annual initiative, managed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD), encourages teams to reduce their energy and water usage through creative and practical changes in behaviour, whether adjusting day-to-day habits or making larger-scale improvements to estate infrastructure.

Those declared gold, silver and bronze winners by an expert judging panel are awarded additional funding through their Local Infrastructure Improvement Fund (LIIF), which can be used to improve camp facilities for serving personnel; for example, through redecorating community hubs or creating new outdoor spaces.

Steve Judd, Sustainability Manager, said, “I would like to congratulate everyone who contributed to this achievement, particularly our Energy Champions. Reducing utility use relies on people making thoughtful choices every day, supported by targeted improvements to buildings and infrastructure. Receiving an award in every region is an excellent result and gives us a strong foundation to build on in the year ahead.”

Each region will be re-entered into the 2026/ 2027 Utilities Savings Challenge so that we can continue to champion energy saving activity across the DTE, whilst also supporting the MOD and Landmarc’s ISO 50001 certification, the international standard for effective energy management.

Well done to all those who took part in this energy-saving initiative!

Becoming a qualified Combat Support Boat (CSB) operator takes skill, commitment and determination.

Noel Connolly, one of our Training Area Operatives, recently completed an intensive eight week course with the Army, developing the specialist skills needed to operate Combat Support Boats and strengthen ’s ability to support military training.

Delivered in three parts, the course combined classroom learning with demanding practical training, covering navigation, watermanship, sea survival, VHF radio, advanced boat handling, towing and pushing.

With the CSB capable of speeds of up to 32 knots and powered by twin water jets, mastering its manoeuvrability is no easy task. The training included navigation by day and night, man-overboard drills, emergency manoeuvres and the challenging task of towing and positioning a large pontoon in varying tides and weather conditions.

Completing the course is a fantastic personal achievement for Noel and adds valuable specialist capability to our team..

It’s also a great example of the expertise, dedication and commitment of our people, helping us provide the specialist support needed to enable effective military training.

Well done, Noel! 👏

Earlier this summer, three Landmarc colleagues and military veterans took part in one of the UK’s toughest team challenges, where teams of six collaborate in developing plans and strategies to solve physical and mental dilemmas. Over 50 hours of mountain biking, trekking, canoeing and problem-solving put their fitness, resilience and teamwork skills to the test.

Charlie Mayo, Shannon Druce and Kevin Morris represented Landmarc over in the Brecon Beacons, where temperatures exceeded 30°C. As they worked their way through the challenge’s seven demanding stages, they covered more than 25 miles by bike and around 21 miles on foot. This effort saw the team land in 29th out of 61 places.

Charlie, who has now completed the UK Challenge nine times, believes the event offers an exceptional opportunity for veterans to challenge themselves post-service, meet like-minded individuals and develop numerous skills. Upon reflection, Charlie said:

"The whole experience was incredible and I came away having learned so much about myself, as well as developing my teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills. Looking back, I'd recommend it to anyone considering taking part. Not only is it a fantastic experience, but you'll also gain valuable skills and confidence that you can take back into the workplace."

Well done to Charlie, Shannon and Kevin for their outstanding efforts!

What makes working across ’s rural estate so different?

David Blake, Rural Estate Delivery Manager in the South West, reflects on the rewards and challenges of working across Landmarc's rural estate and the people who make it such a special place to work.

“What makes our work so different is the sheer variety and scale of the Defence Training Estate (DTE), and the fact that we are managing it alongside its primary purpose as a place for military training.

“Across the estate, our teams look after an incredible mix of landscapes, habitats, wildlife and heritage.

“There are, of course, some very particular challenges that come with working on the DTE.

“For me, though, the joys of working on the DTE far outweigh the frustrations.

“One of the things I love most is seeing the enthusiasm our colleagues have for the places we look after.

“The scale, diversity and sheer unpredictability of the DTE mean there is always something new to discover. And perhaps that is the best thing about working here: no two days are quite the same, and you never know what you might see from the office window!”

As part of Landmarc’s social value commitment under the Training Estate Support Contract (TESC), we have pledged to offer up to 6 work placement opportunities each year, in order to equip future professionals with valuable workplace experience. This year, we are delighted to welcome our first two new placement students, Alexandra Bonnett and Isabella Weston, who will spend the next 12 months working and learning in Landmarc’s mission-driven environment, while contributing to key areas of the business.

Alexandra, who has completed two years of her degree in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Southampton, will be specialising in Communications and Social Value. She will be working towards creating a range of Social Value Impact Reports and digital content to showcase Landmarc’s strengths. Alexandra says:

“I understand the importance of fostering connection and making a difference in one's local and wider community, and am greatly looking forward to communicating, both internally and externally, Landmarc's many examples of positive change.”

Isabella has also completed the first two years of her degree in Environmental Management and Sustainability at the University of Reading. She has joined Landmarc as our new Energy and Sustainability Placement Student, supporting the implementation of new software and reviewing energy consumption data. Isabella says:

“I was drawn to Landmarc by the opportunity to gain first-hand experience working on large-scale projects while learning about the wide range of work the team delivers. I'm excited to develop my energy and sustainability skills, gain advice and support from experienced colleagues and learn about all aspects of sustainability within Landmarc.”

We look forward to seeing the contributions that Alexandra and Isabella will make in driving our Social Value and Sustainability initiatives.
