Log burner season is officially back 🪵🔥

If you’ve already stocked up for winter, how you store your firewood now will make a big difference to how well it burns over the colder months.

Quality airflow, keeping logs off damp ground and protecting them from the worst of the rain all help your firewood stay dry and ready to burn, so we’ve put together our top tips for storing logs this autumn and winter.

Swipe through and save this one for later 👉🏼

And if you’d rather get completely winter-ready, we can help with that too. We deliver logs locally direct to your door and build bespoke timber log stores, from compact stores beside the house to much larger structures for serious winter stockpiles.

Built to keep your firewood dry, ventilated and in the best condition for when you need it 🌲

Logs sorted. Storage sorted. Bring on winter!

Timber is timber, right? Not quite! 🌲

One of the biggest differences between timber buildings can be something you might never think to ask about: what timber has actually been used to build it?

Different species, grades and dimensions have different strengths and characteristics, which is why we don’t simply buy one type of timber and use it for everything. Structural timber needs the appropriate strength and grade for the job it’s doing within the frame.

🪵 Douglas fir is one of our favourites for exposed structures and traditional framing, with plenty of natural character and excellent structural qualities.

🪵 Larch is naturally durable and particularly well suited to external applications such as cladding, where it can weather beautifully over time.

🪵 Redwood is versatile, workable and useful across a wide range of joinery, cladding and building applications when correctly specified.

🪵 Green oak brings something different again, particularly for substantial traditional frames where the timber itself becomes a major part of the finished structure.

And even within the same species, timber dimensions, grade, moisture content and intended use all matter. This is why comparing two quotes based purely on the dimensions of the finished building rarely tells you the full story. One might use smaller sections and a completely different specification underneath the cladding.

For us, the question isn’t “what’s the cheapest timber we can build this with?”... It’s “what timber is right for this part of this building?”

Because choosing good materials is important. Knowing where and why to use them is just as important. Based in Devon, building across the South West. Here’s how you can contact us:

Before we design your building, we’ll probably ask what you’re putting inside it. And there’s a good reason for that! 🛠️

A workshop full of tools and machinery needs something completely different from a garage housing classic cars. A garden office has different requirements again. Even if all three buildings have exactly the same footprint.

What goes inside affects the size and position of the doors, floor construction, natural light, ventilation, electrics, insulation, workbench positions and how much usable space you actually need around everything.

We also think beyond day one. If there’s a chance your garage could become a workshop later, or your shed could eventually become an office, it’s worth planning for that before we start cutting timber.

That’s why one of our first questions isn’t simply “How big do you want it?”
It’s “What do you want to do in it?”

Because two buildings can be exactly the same size on paper and require completely different specifications. The purpose comes first. The building follows.

Been looking at an empty patio or unused corner of the garden and thinking it could be doing more? 🌿

A pergola is one of those additions that can completely change how you use an outdoor space. It gives an area purpose, creates somewhere you naturally want to sit and helps connect the house and garden without enclosing everything.

So, why consider one?

🌿 Make more of the space you already have: Turn an underused patio or empty area into somewhere you’ll actually spend time.

🍴 Create a dedicated place to entertain: Outdoor dining, BBQs, drinks with friends or somewhere for the family to gather throughout the summer.

☀️ Add shade and shelter: Depending on the design, a pergola can make an exposed part of the garden far more comfortable and usable when the weather isn’t quite playing ball.

🏡 Bring the house and garden together: A well-positioned structure helps an outdoor area feel like a genuine extension of the home.

🌲 Add character: Oak, Douglas fir and other natural timbers bring warmth and structure to a garden, weathering naturally and developing more character with age.

And because we build ours bespoke, the dimensions, positioning, timber and design are all worked around your garden and how you want to use it. If there’s a part of your outdoor space you know could be doing more, get in touch and let’s see what we can create.

Why do we fully ply some of our workshops and garages? 🔨

It might look like a finishing choice, but there are some very practical reasons we recommend it depending on how the building will be used.

A plywood-lined interior gives you a tough, hard-wearing surface that can cope with the knocks and scrapes you’d expect in a working garage or workshop. It also protects the insulation and wall build-up behind it, keeping everything safely enclosed.

But one of the biggest advantages comes later.

Want to add shelving? A tool rack? Storage cupboards? A new workbench? With plywood across the walls, you’ve got far more freedom over where things can be fixed without constantly trying to find the studs behind the lining.

It also gives the building flexibility. A garage used purely for the car today might become part workshop in five years’ time, while a hobby space might eventually need completely different storage.

We like thinking about those possibilities while we’re building, because adapting a space later is much easier when it’s been designed with that in mind from day one.

Sometimes spending a little more time on the inside gives you a building that can do a lot more for you in the future. Based in Devon, building across the South West. Here’s how you can contact us:

What’s actually behind the cladding? When you look at a finished timber building, the cladding gets most of the attention. But it’s really only the final layer of a much bigger system.

Behind it, there’s a lot going on.

1️⃣ THE TIMBER FRAME:
This is the structure of the building. Timber sizes, centres, openings and bracing all need to be appropriate for the size of the build, roof and how the space will be used.

2️⃣ THE MEMBRANE:
A breathable membrane provides another line of protection against moisture getting into the structure, while allowing water vapour from within to escape.

3️⃣ THE BATTENS:
The cladding isn’t simply fixed straight onto the membrane. Battens create separation between the outer cladding and the structure behind it.

4️⃣ THE VENTILATION GAP:
That space is there for a reason. Air movement behind the cladding helps moisture escape and allows the wall to dry, which is particularly important when you’re building with timber in the Devon climate.

5️⃣ THE CLADDING:
Only then do you get to the bit everyone sees. Whether that’s Douglas fir, larch, redwood or composite, the cladding provides the external finish and another layer of protection from the weather.

And then there are all the smaller details around corners, openings, the base of the wall and where the cladding meets the roof. So when you see a beautifully clad timber building, remember: the bit you’re looking at is only the final layer.

A lot of the craftsmanship - and a lot of what you’re investing in - has already been covered up🌲🔨 Based in Devon, building across the South West. This is how you can get in touch:

WHAT WE STAND FOR 🌲🪵

When we started Axe & Timber, the aim was never to build as many timber buildings as possible. We wanted to build things we were proud to put our name against.

That still shapes how we work today 🛠️

We choose materials because we trust them, spend time on details that might eventually be completely hidden, and we’ll tell you if we think there’s a better way of doing something, even when that option costs less.

Every project is being built for someone’s home, garden or business, and we want the finished result to be something that works brilliantly, looks incredible and still feels like the right decision years down the line.

You’ll deal with a small team who know your project, understand the decisions behind it and care about getting the details right.

👉🏼 Premium materials. Quality craftsmanship. Honest advice.

And work we’re proud to leave behind. That’s what you can expect from Axe & Timber.

Anyone can write “built to last” on a website. Here’s what we actually mean by it 🔨

A finished timber building can look fantastic, but how it performs in 10, 15 or 20+ years comes down to decisions that are often completely hidden by the time we hand it over. So when we say we build for the long term, we’re talking about things like:

1️⃣ THE FOUNDATIONS:
Everything starts underneath the building. The right base, correct levels and quality drainage help keep the structure stable and timber away from unnecessary moisture.

2️⃣ THE TIMBER SPECIFICATION:
Not all timber is equal. Species, structural grade, dimensions and treatment all matter, and we choose them according to what that particular part of the building needs to do.

3️⃣ MOISTURE MANAGEMENT:
Timber needs to be able to deal with the British weather. Membranes, ventilation, airflow, drainage and keeping vulnerable areas protected all play their part.

4️⃣ THE FIXINGS:
They might represent a tiny percentage of the finished building, but they’re holding a lot of it together. We use quality fixings suited to the timber and environment they’re going into, not simply whatever is cheapest.

5️⃣ THE ROOF & WEATHER DETAILING:
Roof pitch, overhangs, gutters, roofing materials and condensation control all affect where water goes and how well the building stays protected.

None of this is particularly glamorous! A lot of it will eventually be covered by cladding, insulation or internal lining and you may never see it again.

But that’s exactly the point.

When you’re investing in a bespoke timber building, you’re not just paying for what it looks like on the day we finish. You’re investing in everything underneath that helps it stay that way.

That’s what “built to last” means to us🌲

Currently accepting compliments on behalf of this workshop 🛠️

We’ve shared this 6m x 4m build before, but there’s plenty going on behind the finished photos.

Working with T W Plume Forestry, we incorporated timber grown on the client’s own land, while every other detail was specified around how the workshop needed to perform.

Heavy-duty Douglas fir castle board, deliberately aligned fixings, a generous roof overhang, insulated roofing to help control condensation and a fully plywood-lined interior all have a reason for being there.

Because no two workshops we build are the same. Timber, foundations, roofing, ventilation, cladding, access and future use can all change from one project to the next.

Bespoke isn’t changing the measurements on a standard building. It’s building around what you actually need.
