βœ… Ground Source Heat Pump Project Completed

We’re delighted to have completed another high-performance renewable heating installation.

The Stiebel Eltron WPE-I Ground Source Heat Pump system has now been fully commissioned and tested, with the plant room installation completed to a high standard by our in-house team.

As part of the works, the borehole ground collector system was thoroughly cleansed, sanitised and treated with Killfrost antifreeze to ensure optimum performance and long-term protection.

Completed works include:

βœ… Ground collector circuit commissioned
βœ… Heat pump commissioned and operational
βœ… Domestic hot water system tested
βœ… Radiator heating system commissioned
βœ… Plant room installation completed

The system is now ready for the final connection and commissioning of the underfloor heating system before customer handover.

A great project and another step towards a low-carbon future with efficient, reliable heating and hot water all year round. β™¨οΈπŸŒ

Why water flow and filter maintenance are absolutely critical on an Air Source Heat Pump system ♻️

An Air Source Heat Pump works a bit like the cooling system in a car β€” it needs the correct amount of water moving around the system to carry heat away properly.

The heat pump creates heat inside the outdoor unit and transfers that heat into the water flowing through the primary circuit (the main heating pipework between the heat pump and the heating system).

If water flow is correct, the heat pump can:

βœ… Carry heat away efficiently
βœ… Run smoothly and steadily
βœ… Reduce electricity consumption
βœ… Reach target temperatures easier
βœ… Improve system lifespan
βœ… Operate defrost cycles correctly in winter

But when flow becomes restricted, problems begin.

If flow is too low:

❌ The heat pump struggles to move heat away
❌ Water inside the unit overheats too quickly
❌ Efficiency drops
❌ The compressor works harder
❌ Energy usage increases
❌ Fault codes and lockouts can occur
❌ Heating performance suffers

A simple way to think about it πŸ‘‡

Imagine boiling a kettle and trying to cool it with either:

* A tiny trickle of water
OR
* A steady flowing stream

The steady stream removes heat much more effectively.

That’s exactly how a heat pump works.

βΈ»

Why flow directly affects efficiency

Heat pumps are most efficient when they can run steadily at lower temperatures for longer periods.

Good water flow allows the system to:

βœ… Extract more usable heat from outside air
βœ… Maintain stable operating temperatures
βœ… Avoid unnecessary stopping and starting
βœ… Keep compressor pressures within ideal operating ranges

When flow drops, the heat pump often compensates by:

❌ Increasing compressor workload
❌ Running hotter
❌ Cycling on and off more frequently

All of this reduces efficiency and increases running costs.

In real-world terms, poor flow can mean:

⚠️ Higher electricity bills
⚠️ Lukewarm radiators
⚠️ Slower hot water recovery
⚠️ Increased wear on expensive components

βΈ»

Why the primary filter is so important

Most heating systems contain contamination such as:

* Magnetite sludge (black metallic debris)
* Flux residue from installation
* Small metal particles
* Scale and dirt

The primary filter is designed to catch this contamination before it reaches the heat pump.

Over time, that filter can become partially blocked.

Even a partially blocked filter can significantly reduce system performance.

When this happens:

❌ Water flow reduces
❌ Pump performance drops
❌ Pressure losses increase
❌ The heat pump sees reduced circulation

βΈ»

What happens if the filter isn’t cleaned?

A neglected filter can eventually cause:

⚠️ Reduced flow rates
⚠️ High temperature differentials
⚠️ Defrost issues
⚠️ Noisy circulation pumps
⚠️ Higher energy consumption
⚠️ Repeated fault codes
⚠️ Premature pump or compressor wear

In more serious cases it can even lead to:

❌ Plate heat exchanger blockage
❌ Pump failure
❌ Compressor stress and shortened lifespan

These repairs can become extremely expensive.

βΈ»

Why regular servicing matters

Routine servicing helps identify and prevent these issues before they become costly breakdowns.

A proper heat pump service should include checks on:

βœ… Flow rates
βœ… System pressures
βœ… Glycol condition (where applicable)
βœ… Air within the system
βœ… Pump operation
βœ… Temperature differentials
βœ… Filter cleanliness
βœ… Expansion vessel charge
βœ… Electrical connections
βœ… Defrost operation

Cleaning the primary filter is one of the simplest but most important parts of servicing because it directly affects the heat pump’s ability to move heat efficiently.

βΈ»

A simple analogy

Think of the heat pump as an athlete β€” and water flow as blood circulation.

If circulation is healthy:

βœ… The athlete performs efficiently

If circulation becomes restricted:

❌ The athlete overheats
❌ Works harder
❌ Tires faster
❌ Performs poorly

The primary filter is effectively the system’s β€œkidney” β€” if it blocks up, the whole system suffers.

βΈ»

The key takeaway πŸ‘‡

A heat pump does not just β€œmake heat” β€” it relies on moving heat efficiently.

Correct water flow is absolutely critical to:

βœ… Efficiency
βœ… Reliability
βœ… Running costs
βœ… System lifespan

One of the biggest causes of poor flow is a neglected or blocked primary filter, which is why regular servicing and filter cleaning are so important on any ASHP system.

If your heat pump hasn’t been serviced recently, now is the perfect time to get it checked πŸ”§β™»οΈ
