Gaming is a secure, growing and dynamic industry sector. Th Gaming industry is hugely valuable to the UK economy. Gamers who started in their teens are now in their 50's! This is a sector where people matter. Employers need to work hard to retain their talent and employees can expect great rewards. Leaders need ‘emotional intelligence’ (EQ) which is defined as the ability to perceive, interpret and work with the emotions of others. As well as the capability to understand, use and manage your own emotions.

I recently read these 2023 statistics which highlight the effects and importance of emotional intelligence in leaders.
• Motivation increases. 87% of millennials are motivated by the emotional intelligence of their leaders
• Retention improves. Employees who have managers with a high EQ are 4x less likely to leave the company
• Employee satisfaction rises. When employees are treated with respect, they are 55% more engaged, 63% more satisfied and 58% more focused on their jobs

EQ hinges on: self awareness, self control, social awareness/empathy, motivation and relationship management.

If EQ is lacking in your leadership team, it will directly impact the development of individuals elsewhere in the organisation, which will affect the direction of the company and productivity. To some extent EQ is instinctive and many people will have it naturally but there is always a degree to which coaching can help and develop even the most natural of leaders.

Diversity is an important issue for any organisation, but it is not just about hiring people of different nationalities, races, genders and sexual orientations – everyone needs to feel they are truly welcome, safe & free to be themselves in the workplace.

Any D&I strategy must be based on what Diversity & Inclusion means to that specific organisation and how it can be successful in supporting the organisation to achieve its goals and reaching business success.

Setting out and being clear about what diversity means, and what inclusion means for the organisation is key. It is the blueprint for the organisation and its environment, it helps then to define what that inclusive culture looks like and how it feels.

elr was founded in 2019 on the back of Larry having completed over 20 years working in the field of Talent, Learning & Development. Larry has worked in Europe, the West Indies and the Middle East supporting a range of organisations from key players in recycling to gaming. He has experience in delivering pragmatic and innovative people solutions that help organisations to grow.

The elr approach has always been to help clients to choose the right solution based on their needs and help them to deliver on their people goals. Some team members excel - they can win new business, place that candidate who is really challenging and have a high ROI. In the words of the late Stuart Baggs, 'Everything they touch turns to sold'. But... is that person really right to build a team round? Do they display the right behaviours? Have they got the credibility? Are they going to have the skills to build a successful team that works really well together and brave the turbulent times as well as enjoying the good?

It is important that leaders ensure the person they are moving up in the organisation into a management/leadership position, is able to take on a team and help the business progress in the right direction. It takes very different skills to being a great team player and everyone needs development and support to succeed, no matter how good the foundations.

The conundrum of acquiring and retaining great talent still poses a challenge. Getting the talent acquisition piece right is so critical regardless of sector.
We have to widen our viewpoint when it comes to attracting talent and link more of what we are doing with our existing teams that persuade others to join.
From our experience supporting businesses and their people strategies, elr see huge opportunities to really make a difference and challenge the way things are done.
