RE TORBAY HOSPITAL

In a professional capacity, I have been asked a few times recently what my stance is on the current situation surrounding Torbay Hospital. This is it:

I don't work from hearsay or gossip, however convincing it may sound. I work from evidence, facts and transparency. That's how I've always approached complex issues and it's how I'll continue to approach this one.

A lack of communication creates uncertainty. Uncertainty creates rumours. Rumours create fear. That doesn't help the public or the people working within our NHS.

If significant changes are genuinely being proposed, then they should be evidenced. If they're not, then that should be made equally clear. Either way, people deserve openness and honesty.

I'd encourage anyone with an interest in this issue to read the available documents, ask difficult questions, keep a paper trail and distinguish clearly between what is fact and what is speculation. There is nothing wrong with challenging organisations. In fact, it's often necessary. But those challenges should be based on evidence wherever possible.

One sentence can completely change public perception. Saying "Pathology is closing" is very different from saying "There are discussions about relocating pathology services." Precision matters, especially when people's health and livelihoods are involved.

I also believe that every meeting relating to significant public decisions should be properly recorded. Unanswered questions should be noted, followed up and, where appropriate, shared publicly. Transparency builds trust.

If someone doesn't answer a question, there are usually only two possibilities. They don't know the answer, in which case they should find out or direct you to someone who does. Or they do know the answer but choose not to answer. If that's the case, it's very reasonable to ask why.

This isn't about taking sides. It's about making sure that public debate is based on evidence, openness, accountability and respect for the people who are ultimately affected.

I will always challenge where I believe challenge is needed, but I'll do so fairly, proportionately and in pursuit of the truth.

I challenge, but only for the good of all.

Have a great weekend 😊💕

I went to the Heart Campaign meeting at The Grand on Wednesday eve and there appears to be a lot of confusion, lack of transparency, worry, and alleged hidden agendas at play with plans around Torbay Hospital.

Not dealing with facts adds to hearsay, miscommunication, increased anxiety (ironically) and more. Facts are indeed hard to come by when you have a Freedom of Information (FOI) dept within Torbay Council not providing appropriate FOI in its entirety, when you have wider organisations, demographics and sectors either not directly invited, not aware that there is space at the table or not even aware that all this is going on.

We have many organisations supporting the health and wellbeing sector in Torbay. What was the reason for not one of the VCSE sector organisations being at this meeting on Wednesday, including representation from Torbay Local Motion? Not one member of Torbay Council’s public health team was there. Apparently the ICB was invited but didn’t attend and are being allusive.

So many questions remain answered. And I always say one thing to that; if a question is asked of you and you don’t know the answer, you can find out or signpost. If you won’t answer the question, there is something to hide. I’ve asked many questions of a few orgs and individuals whilst living and working in Torbay over the years and it’s made them very uncomfortable and they in turn then offer nothing but silence and brand people ‘negative’ for challenging.

Thankfully, the world is changing. I truly believe that. More and more people are waking up to what’s really happening around them. How we’re being controlled, misled, manipulated. If something doesn’t feel right to you, question it. Or walk away from it. Whatever you need to do to preserve your own health and wellbeing. That in turn supports the NHS which is sadly now at crisis point, firefighting crisis not only externally but internally.

Preventative health and wellbeing is paramount now more than ever. True community, grassroots-led, honest support of small businesses - not just the larger ones who ‘play the game’ or are able to put the biggest envelope on the table!

The latter is not a world I want to be a part of. I want one full of heart - that’s the real heart campaign 🙂💕
