Offham G100 & G99.

Argand Solutions were contracted by Ethical Power ( www.ethical-power.com )to provide a single, cohesive control system solution to meet multiple grid compliance requirements for their Offham project. In response to this requirement, Argand designed, built & supplied a solution solving G100
export limitation, G99 Type-C Fault Recording, Dynamic System Monitoring, and Power Quality Monitoring.

The client’s connection agreement with UK Power Networks (UKPN, the Distribution Network Operator, DNO) also required an Active Network Management (ANM) interface for their Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) flexible connection solution.

Argand, as an approved DERMS customer interface provider, integrated this interface requirement into their solution to manage UKPN’s interaction / control of the customers' generation assets. This required Argand to communicate with UKPN’s interface via DNP3 - the DNO's chosen communication protocol.

The Offham site has an existing gas generation installation, connected to the DNO network on its own Point of Connection (PoC) to the Grid. Ethical Power was then contracted by their client, Infinis, to install a new solar photovoltaic (PV) installation on the same site yet connecting to a different PoC - yet with the complexity that the PV's export agreement is dependent on the net
export across both PoCs for the gas and PV PoCs added together.

This requirement meant that Argand had to design a system to monitor at 2 remote locations, whilst meeting G100/2 (export limitation regulation) and DERMS regulatory requirements.

The project was successfully commissioned, and went live in August this year.

The end client is now using Argand for multiple projects, with a range of generation and storage asset types, located across the UK. All are projects with complex and unique compliance requirements (G100, G99, ANM, etc), coupled with challenging control requirements (multi-asset, nulti-location, multi-PoC).

These projects are being successfully commissioned currently and on an ongoing basis into next year.

Milton Keynes College BREEAM Metering

Argand Solutions have completed the design, build and supply of a BREEAM-compliant energy and water monitoring hub at Milton Keynes College on behalf of PANDA CES (https://lnkd.in/eypgZTgb). The BREEAM hub will enable the college to achieve their BREEAM ENE-02 energy monitoring and WAT-02 water monitoring compliance. The Argand BREEAM hub solution connects to all of the electricity and water sub meters within the college and enables the real / near-time extraction of electrical (energy and power quality) and water data which can then be visualised via Argand’s GridLENZ platform. As part of BREEAM, it is imperative to provide analysis to enable the breakdown of electrical plant by power and lighting which GridLENZ provides. In addition, our energy dashboard provides total energy consumed, exported and generated on-site for a high level overview of electrical and water flows. For more information about how we can help with BREEAM and wider monitoring requirements, please get in touch.

Macallan Distillery ... Argand Solutions were engaged by Emtec Energy (https://www.emtecenergy.co.uk/) to provide
a G100/2 export limitation and SCADA solution for a project they were delivering for Macallan Distillery https://www.themacallan.com - a 2.1MWp, behind-the-meter (BTM)
ground-mounted solar project. With a high-voltage (HV) connection to the Grid, Argand Solutions designed a G100/2 export
limitation solution that enabled real-time monitoring from their HV incoming supply communicating across a significant distance to our main control solution that dynamically managed 14x solis inverters based on the sites fluctuating demand profile.
As part of the ongoing monitoring and data collection, Argand were engaged to provide real / near-time data via their SCADA interface on the GridLENZ platform. As such, our GridGEM
solution collects, processes and communicates data to our cloud platform including weather assets to enable performance ratio (PR) calculations and assess the overall performance of the
PV-system. In addition, GridLENZ is capturing inverter string level data to allow the O&M team to detect any
problems early and optimize the performance of the PV-system.
Through use of Argand’s cloud platform, users can enable real-time alerts to inform them of any situations on site that may require attention such as a loss of communication or faults to
inverter(s).

Bluestone’s Solar Project in Wales: A Smarter Approach to Export Limitation.
Bluestone Resort recently installed 2.97MW of solar generation at their park in Wales. To ensure compliance with grid requirements, they needed a G100/2 export limitation solution. Working with Bluestone’s solar installer, JJP (https://www.linkedin.com/company/jjp-services-ltd/), Argand provided a G100-compliant export limitation system, along with the installation of a Grid Constraints Panel (GCP) which plays a key role in communicating with National Grid (NGED), the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) by responding to the network operator’s signals in real time through a staged system:
Stage 1 – Soft Stop:
If the DNO initiates Stage 1, the system sends the generation output to 0%, effectively pausing generation without disconnecting. This is known as a soft stop.
Stage 2 – Hard Stop:
If required, the DNO can escalate to Stage 2. This opens the generation breaker, removing AC power to the system — a hard stop.
These types of grid management features are becoming increasingly common across the UK as more renewable energy is added to the network and for any generation system above a certain size, DNOs are now requiring a GCP (also known as a Customer Constraints Panel, CCP). These form part of what’s called an Active Network Management (ANM) scheme — a dynamic way to ensure local grid stability. NGED went a step further by requiring Bluestone to extend their ANM panel to include a new Stage 0, which enables a dynamic export limit. Previously, the export limit was fixed at 1100 kW, but now, the DNO can adjust that limit in real time depending on the condition of the local grid. When this happens, the DNO sends a new limit signal to the ANM panel. Argand receives the signal and dynamically adjusts the output of the generation system which ensures Bluestone always operates within whatever export capacity is permitted at that time. This solution has now been fully commissioned and is live and operational.

We’ve just completed an exciting project at Bluestone Resort in Wales, in collaboration with our client, JJP Services, resulting in the network compliant installation of just under 3 MW of solar PV, with a high-voltage connection. This installation also required an active network management (ANM) interface for Stage 1 (stop stop) & Stage 2 (hard trip) with the ability to implement the dynamic management of their export limit in the future. This is an interesting development within network management as traditionally export limits have been static, but as energy networks evolve, there’s a growing trend towards dynamic constraint management as this approach offers more flexibility; helping to optimise the integration of renewable energy. We're really proud for Argand Solutions to be at the heart of the provision of the solutions to help meet this growing complexity.

Active Network Management limits: Are you compliant?

Active Newtork Mangement (ANM) is a requirement from both the Distribution and Transmission Network Operators to ensure that the physical and safe limits of the network are maintained, but awareness of the rules around power flow management are often not fully understood. At Argand Solutions we know that many Project Mangers may only fully grasp the implications of complying with ANM during the later stages of project roll-out, so for this reason we are embedding Stage 1 and Stage 2 ANM into our panels as a minimum, before going on to assess the benefits of Stage 0. It's all as part of our GridGEM Solution. To learn more on how you can spot the risks take a look at our blog post https://www.argandsolutions.com/news-blogs/2022/7/27/what-is-active-network-management-anm You can e-mail us from that page or give our team a call.

Active Network Management (ANM) is becoming more widely used by Grid operators. This article takes you through the basics to understand more.

Using Argand's GridMap software, our team worked with a client based in Mexico, (where there are significant constraints in place on imported energy), to model a 'peak shaving' strategy which demonstrated the size of battery required in order to keep imported energy levels within the contracted demands of the Network Operator plus the economic and carbon impacts. Fraser Durham: "The client is very happy with the capacity for GridMAP to model their requirements, as not all battery modelling software solutions are able to clearly show these impacts across a range of battery sizes; finding the optimum size is crucial for this client, as exceeding demand would likely result in the site being shut off." Argand release a real-time, dynamic visualisation tool for all clients, showing exactly how energy is flowing between on-site generation (solar, wind, CHP), grid & on-site loads. Fraser Durham comments: "We have listened to feedback from clients and we know that the wider, 'non technical' members of a team are often looking to grasp how energy is flowing within a generation site....and while granular, historic data is still available for detailed analysis, this immediate visualisation, similar to that found in electric and hybrid vehicles, helps to more easily convey the benefits of renewable investments to the wider community."
