Recycle Week is a key moment on the calendar as it helps to highlight the value of recycling and the progress being made towards a more circular economy.
Increasing recycling rates, improving public awareness and encouraging better resource management all remain essential parts of reducing environmental impact, and this week helps bring that into sharper focus.
But, at the same time, effective waste reduction requires a broader view of the full waste landscape. Not every waste stream is suitable for conventional recycling processes, particularly where materials are complex, contaminated or difficult to separate.
That’s why long-term progress depends on recognising the role of multiple solutions working together, from reduction and reuse through to recycling, recovery and alternative treatment technologies.
Our biotechnology is an important part of this picture, helping organisations manage difficult waste streams more sustainably by removing the organic fraction, allowing the recyclables to be extracted and processed; further increasing recycling rates, whilstreducing reliance on landfill and low-level incineration.
A more sustainable future will rely on a broader range of viable waste solutions across the waste hierarchy.
