"So what exactly does a private investigator actually do?"

A question I get asked more than you'd think, and one I got to answer on air today.

Great afternoon at Cotswold Radio with Simon Read as part of the monthly business forum, alongside Ross Siviter and Pat Starke.

We covered everything from surveillance and covert operations to leasehold properties and specialist branding and packaging. Not your typical lunchtime radio.

What I enjoy about these conversations is the chance to pull back the curtain a bit. Most people's idea of a PI comes from film and television. The reality involves a lot more legislation, technology and early mornings.

Big thanks to Simon Read for having me on, and to Cotswold Networking for making these connections happen in the first place. Local business owners actually talking to each other, sharing what they do and how they can help. It sounds simple but it works.

An intro to the Director…

My story isn’t like a dramatic TV series, it’s a lot more real than that!

Before founding SPI, I spent years working in prisoner custody and transport.

It’s the kind of job that teaches you a lot about people, how they move, how they think, how quickly situations can shift, and how important calm, controlled decision-making really is.

That experience shaped the investigator I have become:

• methodical

• observant

• steady under pressure

• and very, very good at noticing behaviour!

Over time, I realised that the same skills used to maintain order could be used to uncover truth and to help people who genuinely need clarity in difficult situations.

And that’s what pulled me into private investigation.

Today, as Director of SPI, I am

And my focus hasn’t changed:

So often people say, “I didn’t know investigators handled that.”

And honestly, I hear it almost every day.

Most people think our world is limited to one or two tasks, when in reality, the variety of situations we’re asked to step into is massive.

This week alone I’ve been asked to help with things like:
• confirming whether someone actually lives where they claim
• gathering clarity for a family going through a difficult time
• checking the legitimacy of an insurance claim
• supporting a business that needed answers quickly
• locating someone who had disappeared without leaving much behind

All completely different situations, yet all fall under what we do.

The truth is, people often don’t realise the range of problems a professional investigator can solve.
Not because they’re unaware, but because our industry isn’t exactly one that shouts about itself.

So here’s the message:
If something doesn’t feel right, doesn’t make sense, or you simply need clarity, there’s probably a way we can help.

You don’t need to know the terminology.
You don’t need to know which service you need.
Just ask the question.
We’ll point you in the right direction.
