Better in, Better Out

Founding BiBO has, among other things, been about leading by example to improve diversity in architecture.

Our observation is that most architects of influence in the western world are overworked (potentially underpaid, but comfortable) heterosexual Caucasian men.

We think overworked heterosexual Caucasian men represent a very small percentage of global demographics.

So we conclude that 1 very small demographic is responsible for designing the cities and buildings that EVERYONE comes into contact with every day. They design hospitals, where some people are living through unspeakable hardship; they design schools, where teachers are struggling to get the things they need to deliver their lessons while simultaneously being told to improve results; they design housing, where new families are wondering where to put their newest baby, or how to pay their mortgage. Do the designers of these buildings really understand all these issues?

BiBO, like many other conscientious practices, recognises that a single mind (or type of mind) cannot have the empathetic or experiential capacity to solve the infinitely diverse range of challenges that architecture often seeks to address. There is only one way to attempt this, and that is to have a designforce made up of people from all walks of life with the humility to admit that they don’t have all the answers.

BiBO is about designing, not just drawing. Designing is about thinking; thinking of the possibilities, the options, finding a solution that can be greater than the sum of its parts and adding just a little bit extra. Its the difference between a pair of jeans, and a pair of jeans that make your butt look amazing - that’s design - that's architecture vs. building.

So, the first thing BiBO did was question what architects DO?!

Well, done properly, it probably starts with a pen(cil), some scraps of paper, and maybe even a glass of wine. Then, we sit and go through all the ‘what ifs’ we can think of: ‘what if people are coming from here?’ ‘what if its raining?’ ‘what if we kept this old tree?’. Then we sketch these things happening, and eventually produce a set of drawings on a computer, write a bit about what we did to get the required permissions and start speaking to the people who will build the thing.

We were not surprised to discover that at no point did ‘doing’ architecture require sitting at a desk, in an office, between the hours of 9-5, on a Monday-Friday. So we removed those constraints and are using ‘agile’ as our starting point. Immediately this opened the doors to one of the founding directors, a working mother faced with returning to her job where the overworked Caucasian heterosexual men were propping up the glass-ceiling. We are curious to see who else this will open the door for.

Our mission is to find how things CAN become possible, and not waste time thinking of all the reasons why they might be impossible. We see the world as it could be, not necessarily as it is.

In IT they say ‘if you put arbage in, you get garbage out: GIGO’. We say if you put Better In, you get Better Out: BiBO!
