This week was the turn of keheren therapys owner Debbie Slater to do our 10 minutes presentation slot:
Why New Year’s Resolutions Fail in the Body (Not the Mind)
Every January, people blame themselves when fitness goals fall apart.
“I lack discipline.” “My willpower isn’t strong enough.”
But after years of working with bodies, one thing is clear:
most people don’t quit because they lose motivation — they quit because their body taps out first.
Our brains may be ready for change, but our tissues often aren’t.
After months of sitting, driving, desk work, and stress, January suddenly asks the body for:
• More movement
• More load
• More intensity
• Less recovery
Muscles shorten. Joints stiffen. Old injuries adapt rather than heal.
So when people start exercising, the weakest link shows up first:
• Tight calves → Achilles pain
• Stiff hips → lower back pain
• Rounded shoulders → neck headaches
And here’s the key point:
Pain beats willpower every time.
Pain affects sleep. Poor sleep kills motivation. Fear of re-injury creates avoidance.
People don’t stop because they’re weak — they stop because their body is shouting louder than their goals.
The people who succeed long-term don’t push harder.
They prepare better.
They focus on:
• Gradual load
• Recovery as part of training
• Treating tension early
• Building capacity, not punishment
That’s where body maintenance matters. Massage and sports therapy aren’t luxuries — they help bodies adapt, recover, and stay consistent. Like servicing a car, small inputs prevent big breakdowns.
So if your New Year’s resolution hasn’t gone to plan, don’t blame your mindset.
Ask whether your body was ready for the change.
Your body doesn’t need more willpower —
it needs a bit of maintenance.
