YOU’RE NOT DIFFICULT!

Ever been called: “Too much” “Too quiet” “Too direct”

Or thought that about someone else? What if it’s not about being difficult, but simply being different?

Understanding behaviour removes judgement and replaces it with clarity.

SAME SITUATION, DIFFERENT REACTIONS...

Two people have the same conversation, one walks away energised, but the other feels drained

Why? It’s not the situation, it’s how we’re wired to respond to it. Understanding that difference can transform relationships.

WHY DO I REACT LIKE THAT?

Ever found yourself reacting in a way you didn’t expect? Snapping when you didn’t mean to, overthinking something small, avoiding a conversation you know you need to have. You’re not “overreacting”, you’re responding according to your behavioural preferences.

The moment you understand that… everything starts to make more sense, that’s where personal development really begins

One of the things we encourage PRISM Practitioners to do is move beyond simply explaining the map and start exploring the questions clients ask.
Recently, after sharing some videos on the PRISM Map and feedback sessions, we were asked:
“How do you maintain a behaviour at work if it is not really part of the role?”
It is a great question and one that opens up a valuable coaching conversation.
If someone is not using certain behavioural preferences in their role, over time those behaviours can become less natural simply because they are not being exercised. The neural pathways associated with them are not being activated as often.
That is where behavioural insight becomes practical.
A Practitioner can help the individual explore where those behaviours might be used. Perhaps through a project, a different responsibility, or even activities outside of work that keep those preferences active.
This is the difference between simply understanding behaviour and applying it in ways that support development.
In this short video, Alex explains how this works using the PRISM Map.
If you work in coaching, leadership development, or HR and would like to use behavioural insight in this way, our PRISM Practitioner Accreditation gives you the tools to interpret the maps and guide these kinds of conversations with confidence.

Behavioural insight is not something that sits in a report. It shows up in everyday moments at work.
 How a leader gives feedback.
 How a team handles pressure.
 How two colleagues interpret the same situation.
When people understand their behavioural preferences, those moments start to change.
 Communication improves.
 Misunderstandings reduce.
 Decisions become clearer.
Small behavioural shifts can have a surprisingly big impact.

Many leadership and development tools provide valuable insight into behaviour, but insight alone rarely changes anything. Real progress happens when that understanding starts influencing how people lead, communicate, and work with others.

In our latest blog we explore an important question, how do organisations move from behavioural insight to real impact? We look at:

• Why behavioural insight is wasted if nothing changes
• Why self-awareness alone is not enough for leadership development
• How behavioural profiling strengthens coaching conversations
• The link between behavioural insight and employee engagement
• How practitioners help turn insight into practical action

Understanding behaviour is fascinating. Applying that understanding in everyday leadership situations is where the real value lies.

Self-awareness is often described as the foundation of leadership and it is important, but awareness on its own rarely changes behaviour. Real development happens when people start experimenting with how they respond in different situations. Understanding behavioural preferences helps people recognise:
 When their natural approach works well.
 When it may need to adapt.
 And how others may experience their behaviour.
That is when behavioural insight begins to translate into real leadership impact. To find out more:

Many workplace frustrations are not about competence; they are about behaviour. When individuals come together as a team, they bring unique strengths, behaviours, and experience. However, whilst that diversity can be a valuable asset, it can also give rise to misunderstanding, conflict and dysfunction. One person wants to explore ideas openly; another wants a clear decision and a plan. Neither approach is wrong.

They are simply different behavioural preferences. When people understand this, something important happens. Frustration turns into understanding and that shift can transform how teams work together.

By harnessing the power of PRISM, businesses can optimise team dynamics, enhance collaboration, and foster a positive work environment.

Understanding your behavioural preferences is interesting, but the real question is what happens next.
One of the questions we were recently asked about the PRISM Map was this:
“How do you maintain a behaviour at work if it is not really part of your job?”
It is a fascinating question because it highlights something important about behaviour.
If a behavioural preference is rarely used, over time it can start to diminish simply because we are not exercising it. In neuroscience terms, the neural pathways associated with that behaviour are not being activated as often.
So, what can you do?
The key is to consciously create opportunities to use that behaviour. This might be through a specific project, taking on a task that draws on that preference, or even developing that behaviour outside of work.
Insight becomes impact when people start recognising how their behaviour shows up in real situations and actively finding ways to use it.
In this short video, Alex explores this question using the PRISM Map and shares a few practical ideas.

People are often fascinated by behavioural insight, it explains why people approach situations differently. But the real question is this:
How do you use that insight?
 Do leaders adjust how they communicate?
 Do teams recognise different working styles?
 Do individuals adapt their behaviour in high pressure situations?
Behavioural insight becomes powerful when it starts influencing everyday decisions. That is when behavioural understanding moves from interesting to genuinely useful.
