Hello Friends, I hope you’re well.
I have been tracking the ‘new cases’ of Covid19 reported in both Italy and UK on a daily basis.
As you know, Italy entered a state of ‘lockdown’ from Monday 9th March, and we followed on Monday 23rd.
This graph is called a ‘Run Chart’ and shows how Italy (in red) trended up daily until 19th March (10 days after their lockdown) and how for the last 10 days have ‘stabilised’ around a median of 5560 cases reported per day. We can say that this data has stabilised because the 10 data points cross the median (in grey) 4 times.
The data might have ‘maxed-out’ because this might demonstrate the full capacity of the Italian healthcare system. But hopefully, it is a true representation of the number of people coming forward.
We must now look for five more points consecutively below the median to show a ‘shift’. This would indicate an improvement/containment. And/or, 5 points consecutively going down. This would be a ‘trend’.
As you can see from the UK graph (in green), we are tracking at almost exactly the same number of new cases reported per day from the 23rd of March when we locked down as Italy were from 9th.
That means if we continue to follow in the same way, we should hopefully start to stabilise from Thursday 2nd April. And hopefully see signs of improvement by Friday 17th.
Well done Everyone for doing your bit. We’ll be winning soon and back to normal by June.

How quickly things can change?!
I’ve just made it home from 3 days in Royal Tunbridge Wells, where the great people at AXA have quickly responded to world events.
It might now be a while before I can return, but these pictures I took today, of various departments starting to practice their new Operating Rhythm techniques, fills me with lots of hope that when I get back, the weather will be warmer and they will be an even more magnificent group of departments, feeling more empowered and serving thousands of people daily even better!

After 4 weeks away on other business, it was great to get back to my client AXA PPP Healthcare today, down in glorious Royal Tunbridge Wells.
My ‘Kohai’ Andy has been doing a fantastic job, spreading the word and using our ‘See The Work’ techniques to engage with and help his colleagues demonstrate variation in their processes and determine the triggers for the Operating Rhythm in their many areas.
This lady’s name is Maria, and she told me today that ‘This is the most exciting and encouraging work I’ve seen in 21 years of working here’...! And then further embarrassed me by saying ‘We’ve all been googling you, and now we all know about ....’ far too many things for my liking haha.
It was a wonderful compliment though. I’m honoured! 🙏🏼 And it’s testimony to the great things the guys are doing here.
It’s going to be a fantastic voyage this year here!

I must confess, after hyping up our ‘12 inches of love’ yesterday, I was a little nervous this morning.
I honestly can’t remember the last time I was alone in the kitchen at Lil’s, it must be about 8 years! But I got well prepared, with a place for everything, and everything in its place.
When the orders for pizza started to come, the dough was pulled and spinning at 33 rpm, just like many of Stu’s beautiful vintage vinyls...!
The regular lads in the kitchen (having a day off) had left me just the right amount of dough and sauce to get me through a busy day.
The atmosphere was lovely and it was one of our favourite Sundays since the summer.
Thank You to everyone that came. And all of you that followed the story and sent nice messages.
Fi working the front of house and me in the kitchen felt nicely nostalgic too. And Stu did an excellent job on the decks.
Should we do it again next Sunday?

I’ve just made it home after the 2nd of two great weeks at HSBC in Birmingham.
I’ve been building an eVSA with two great new friends, George and Anna, learning lots about the business, interacting with hundreds of their colleagues and generally having a good time.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of presenting one of my ‘Industrial Evolution’ lectures at the university. And, when asked before hand about my presenting style, I said ‘It’s improvised. Like Jazz Flute’... and apparently, it was groovy! 👌🏼

In all honesty, I had mixed emotions about returning to Birmingham to work with this famous client after so many years. I thought it would mess with my Ikigai. But I can also honestly say that I had a lovely week, met some excellent people and felt like there are super things we will be able to achieve together. Ikigai restored. Roll-on next week 🙏🏼

With a new year starting for my consultancy business, the family business growing back home growing all the time too, and following an inspiring conversation with my friend Jamie last night, it’s time to do this exercise again.
I’ll share the data when I have some quality output. And in the meantime, I’m thinking of putting up a little video on how I use it with some clients to maximise the value in their working day. Would you like to see that?

What is Productivity?
Often it’s described as a measure of the units of output over a given time.
But how productive are we really?
What if your work involves reading lots of emails that you don’t need to reply to? Or attend lots of meetings that don’t have an agenda or really require your input and consequent action?
What do you really count in your day as ‘Productive’?

Well, I have an amazing 19 days of being based in Witney before my next trip away and I want it to be as productive as possible, with my ‘Daily Pie’ as well balanced as usual (see previous posts).
So, I have found a wall in the house to help me visualise some priorities.
In my opinion true ‘Productivity’ is the output of Actions that deliver noticeable Benefits to these 3 categories, in order of: Customers (the green post-its). Family/Friends/Colleagues (the blue post-its). Myself (the orange post-its).
Then prioritised for delivery ‘This week’, ‘Next week’, ‘This month’, based on how ‘easy’ they are to do and if they need collaboration with others.
All I now have to do is do them. And as it says along the top ‘I have been ‘Productive’ if I clear these post-its’.

I swallowed my own pill and kept a journal of my week from waking in Swansea last Wednesday, to being home in Witney over the weekend and up to now in Leeds this week.
It’s been a worthwhile exercise and has entertained and educated me.
I’ve rounded the ‘Hours’ spent and ‘% of Time’ awake up to make the graph readable.
Overall, i wasn’t surprised that it didn’t fit the 22% Work, 33% Rest, 45% Play model, but I’m happy with the balance and relatively low levels of ‘waste’.
I am genuinely surprised by the 18 hours or 15% of my time awake I spend just ‘Thinking’ though. There is of course more to this: I’m actually kinda doing more work, or learning about something. Not always just sitting cross legged on a log.!
And it’s funny to learn I spend 4 hours + doing my hair, skin and beard..! :)
My 19 hours at Fat Lil’s did of course include more ‘Family Time’, but we’re all working, so it doesn’t count like that.
Following this Research, my next step will be to Experiment with making sure I am as useful as possible to everyone working at Fat Lil’s though, as well as having a good time. 👍🏼

I always enjoy asking and hearing about how people make and spend their time.
We often just lose it, for reasons that are hard to remember and there’s nothing worse than not having enough time to do the things that you want to do because they add value to you, your loved ones or even your colleagues and customers.
This week I’ve had fun seeing the expression on people’s faces when they see this pie chart and that their contracted work hours only fill 22% of the week. And the simple fact that we’re asleep longer than we we’re at work. It just doesn’t feel that way for many. And when asked ‘what do you do’? Many can’t remember.

HACK
There are 13 weeks in a ‘quarter’ and I like to use one of them to perform the simple task of journaling my entire week from waking to sleeping daily.
Simply writing down what I’ve done, just as I’ve done it. Eg.
06:30-07:00 Wake & Social Media (this)
07:00-07:10 Yoga on bed
07:10-07:30 Bathroom time
07:30-08:20 Breakfast

Each item should be recorded just after completion to make sure it’s fresh in the mind and the timing is accurate.
You will notice that before even half a day is over, you are becoming more efficient.
This is because you’re becoming more aware of time and how you want to use it.
By the end of Day 1, you’ll hopefully feel more productive. By Day 2, more focussed and calm. By Day 3, more rested.
And by Day 7, you’re totally Bruce Lee..!
At the end of the week, go back through your journal and add together all the minutes spent doing the same type of thing eg Social Media like this. Or travel to work, or 121s, or dining with family/friends, etc

Researching your own experience like this for one week will allow you to identify what is not adding value for you, others at work, and/or at home. Aim to completely STOP those things now. Or at least Experiment in ways to reduce the time taken to do them over the next 12 weeks.
Do MORE of the things you do that you and others love.
Mark in the calendar when it’s time to do your Research again and see if you’ve Developed.
But trust me, you won’t need the data to tell you. You’ll be able to Feeeeel the improvement. 👌🏼
