Your Summer break may just be starting, but we’re already beginning to look ahead to Christmas!🎄🎅 That’s right, with our schedule filling up faster than Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve, now is the perfect time to start planning for the winter months ahead.

In the lead up to last Christmas, we successfully delivered a number of improvement schemes for clients across the UK, ensuring their premises were ready to weather the increased footfall and demands of the busiest time of the year. One example is a line marking scheme our operatives carried out in Bradford. Following vital patch repair work carried out by our client, our crews got to work installing new markings and refreshing the retained markings.

✅ Over the course of this project our team delineated:
✅ Over 3800m of white and yellow lines for parking bays, hatching and centre lining.
✅ Traffic flow markings including arrows and give way markings.
✅ Specialist logos for accessible and parent/child bays.

We are thrilled to share the completion of a significant large-scale project for a valued client in East Riding of Yorkshire.

Over the course of 15 shifts, our specialists delivered a comprehensive solution across this multi-use facility that included:

✅ S278 highway and cycleway lining including centre lining, traffic management markings and cycle markings.
✅ Car park markings that encompassed standard bays and specialist bays including electric charging bays and accessible bays.
✅ Service yard markings including large areas of hatching and safe pedestrian routes.

We successfully handed over a concisely delineated, fully operational facility which aligned with our client’s specification. Our brand new markings will efficiently manage traffic flow, allowing users to safely navigate from point to point whether on foot or by vehicle.

Did you know?

The history of line marking in UK dates back to the early 20th century.

By 1921 Birmingham had begun testing central white lining following complaints by residents of careless driving which led to collisions, yet it still took almost a decade after this for the white line to be legally acknowledged.

With the growth of car ownership and more vehicles on the road, safety and traffic management became even more important. Visibility at night and during foggy conditions remained a concern. However, by 1934 Percy Shaw invented and patented the cats eye road stud – inspired by the reflective shine of a cat's eyes at night. The original design featured a glass reflector set in a rubber dome mounted in a cast iron housing, with a wiper mechanism that cleaned the reflector as traffic passed over. This allowed the device to remain visible even after rain or snow.

By the 1950s, yellow lines were introduced to establish rules and restrictions surrounding parking and unloading, as well as traffic flow. During this time the double white line was also introduced on roadways to prevent drivers from overtaking on roads where it was deemed too dangerous to do so.

Road markings would later take a leap forward in the 1960s with the introduction of a line marking material we know very well today - thermoplastic. Made from a mixture of resin, pigment, filler and glass beads, this material is heated to 200 degrees before being applied to the surface. Today, these humble little lines that came from such simple beginnings help to maintain rules and regulations, manage vehicle movement as well as keep us safe across a myriad of environments including on highways, car parks, warehouses, airports and service yards.

The evolution of line marking has been significant, with materials now on the market to suit a range of settings, from for car park line marking to materials for use in freezer environments. As and continue to advance, so too does the potential for more sophisticated line marking solutions.

We’ve been busy delivering another major scheme for a valued client, focused on upgrading their existing car park markings by enlarging the bay sizing and installing clearly defined pedestrian walkways.

Over the last two years, our line marking experts have carried our substantial improvement work throughout this site, helping to maximise usability. Our latest project involved the utilisation of our captive shot blaster to remove the existing parking bay lining and reinstalling them in single pack epoxy at a larger width to ensure even the largest consumer vehicles can park comfortably between the lines! In addition to the bay modifications, we have also been tasked with installing brightly coloured walkways to ensure safe pedestrian access throughout the car park levels.
