So this is the third post on marketing, and this time we're moving away from the idea of the marketing machine and we are going to examine the power of questioning in your marketing and that is more to do with style.
Too many marketing campaigns rely on telling rather than asking for example
• The easiest way from A to B
• Able to be assembled in under 10 minutes
• The family firm with 75 years trading
• MOT and servicing for only 65 pounds
• The nail bar with the personal touch
• We’ll cut your grass and take it away leaving no mess.

Telling can go some way to getting to emotion which is an important part making a sale, but questions can get there quicker. In my workshop on Friday morning, I'll be exploring this in much greater detail but here are some examples

• Isn’t it about time you booked another holiday?
• What difference would a garden room make to your family?
• Looking to give your child new experiences?
• Wouldn’t a one-click buy be great?
• Why not treat yourself to our fabulous spa?
• How would you like to meet new people?
• How important is it to get there safely?
• Summer Barbeque? Let’s get your lawn manicured, shall we?

The Who, What, Where and most importantly Why questions cover most bases, and on Friday I will share more insight on the power of this strategy.
See you there

Yes a cog is an old fashioned reference to a key machine part! but you maybe wondering why I have referred to marketing as a machine?

Marketing can be described as many things, for example marketing is maths, marketing is measuring, marketing is a machine. Some people may want to add that marketing is frustrating, puzzling, un-predictable.

Well it is a process. And there are many essential cogs that turn the process into something that works. The particular cog I will share with you is that of measuring your marketing.

I am going to assume that your marketing strategy (you do have a strategy right?) has at least three lead generation parts to it. Like a three legged stool being somewhat more stable than a two legged one!

Strategy 1 brings in 10 leads a week and converts 4 to customers at a cost of £200 (keeping the numbers simple)
So cost of acquisition of a lead is £20
Cost of acquisition of a customer is £50
Conversion rate is 40%
Revenue per customer is £30 so total revenue is £120
So we are making a loss!

Strategy 2 brings in only 3 leads a week and converts 2 at a cost of £30.
So cost of acquisition of a lead is £10
Cost of acquisition of a customer is £15
Conversion rate is 66%
Revenue per customer is £30 as before so total revenue is £60.
So the marketing strategy is cash positive! £30 is generating £60.
Now provided that the cost of sale is less than £15 per customer we are in profit.
Where would you spend your money to boost the strategy?

This is measuring my friend. Or at least an example of it. One vital COG in your strategy.

I am digging deeper into this and other essential Marketing tips on Friday morning - on line.

No, Don't! What is the biggest mistake you can make in your business? Ok let’s be honest – there are many contenders. However previous experience has (or hasn’t) taught businesses to NOT turn off lead generation (marketing, vital lifeblood of the business.

In recessions, in depressions, in challenging times our instinct is to protect the business by minimising costs, and amongst the first to go is marketing. Devastating at the very least. Sometimes fatal to the business.

To understand this let’s look at two key principles. Firstly, whether good times or bad, marketing is never a cost it is always an investment; it should generate a greater-than-outlay return.
If it isn’t doing that, or we don’t know whether it is doing that, then we must change/adapt strategy, and measure the impact.

The second principle; marketing is the first essential step in lead generating which through our sales process and products, leads to revenue and profit.

If we aren’t lead generating then it is akin to a care home that is not attracting new residents. There is only one inevitable outcome.
I am going to be exploring this in much more depth in my next workshop. If interested, then details here.

Stress.
Eckhart Tolle's definition (no I'm not claiming credit), yet one I align with is "being here yet wanting to be there"

In business, this is as relevant a definition as anywhere else. One of the privileges of my role is helping individuals and businesses to recognise the "here" and the "there" and then helping map the path from one to the other and ensuring they keep to the plan.

I could never profess to be more knowledgeable than any business owner in their own business or sector but I can certainly often be the catalyst for fresh reflection and evaluation.

Reducing stress lies simply in recognising, understanding, and then acting on reducing the gap between the here and there.`
It is a simple concept but the ex*****on isn't necessarily easy.
Good thing then that we aren't alone!

We have people to turn to. PM me, if you are finding stress in your business, is something that needs attention.
