How do you carry out a major boiler replacement without disrupting a busy school?

During a planned heating system upgrade at a secondary school in Wiltshire, Rapid Energy was contacted to provide a temporary solution to maintain swimming pool heating and hot water services.

Following a site survey, our team supplied a 600kW temporary boiler and 250kW plate heat exchanger, integrating both into the existing heating system.

With remote monitoring in place, the contractor could progress with the refurbishment while essential heating and hot water services were maintained.

How does an indirect diesel fired heater work?

IDF heaters are a powerful way to provide temporary heating across large commercial and industrial spaces, but how do they actually work?

It comes down to six key steps:

1️⃣ Fuel – Diesel is supplied to the burner
2️⃣ Combustion – Heat is generated inside the combustion chamber
3️⃣ Heat exchange – Energy transfers through the heat exchanger
4️⃣ Airflow – A fan moves air across the heated surfaces
5️⃣ Warm air – Heated air is delivered into the space through ducting
6️⃣ Exhaust – Combustion gases are discharged separately through the flue

We offer 45kW–200kW IDF heater hire, with installation and commissioning available from our engineers.

At 3:30pm on a Friday, we received an emergency call from an FM client after a boiler failure left a secure facility in Lincolnshire without heating or hot water.

With the site unable to operate as normal, we needed to move quickly. Within four hours, a senior engineer was on site assessing the requirements, while our depot team worked into the evening preparing the equipment for the following morning.

By Saturday morning, 2 × 300kW temporary boilers were on site and installation was underway.

By 2pm, heating and hot water had been fully restored less than 24 hours after the initial call.

A fantastic team effort across engineering, transport, and our depot team got the facility back up and running with minimal disruption.

Supporting a Family After a Devastating House Fire 💚

We’re very pleased to have joined OCO Connect in supporting Shorefa Khan and her family in North Walworth, Southwark, following a devastating house fire earlier this year.

Fortunately, all five family members were unharmed, but the fire caused extensive damage to their home, so they needed temporary accommodation while the property was restored.

After hearing about their circumstances through OCO Connect, Rapid Energy donated £2,000 towards the family’s refurbishment and recovery costs.

Our Commercial Director and Co-founder, Jamie Ross-Davies, recently met Shorefa and her family alongside OCO Connect, former Mayor of Southwark Cllr Naima Ali and current Mayor Cllr Claire Sheppard.

With renovation work now underway, we hope our contribution helps make the recovery process a little easier.

A big thank you to OCO Connect for bringing us together and allowing us to support Shorefa and her family.

Keeping a car manufacturing plant warm, safe and compliant. 🌡️

Ongoing construction work, poor insulation, and frequently used loading bay doors made it difficult to maintain the required 15°C minimum temperature in the plant’s picking warehouse.

Following a site survey, Rapid Energy supplied 4 × 200kW indirect diesel-fired heaters, providing an 800kW temporary heating solution with thermostatic control and ongoing fuel management.

The result? Reliable temperatures, continued operations and compliance maintained.

6 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Boiler

Choosing the right temporary boiler is about more than availability, it's about finding a solution that keeps your business running with minimal disruption.

Before you hire, ask:

✅ Is it the right size?
✅ How quickly can it be delivered?
✅ Will it integrate with my existing system?
✅ Is fuel management included?
✅ Do they offer a full turnkey service?
✅ Do they have experience in my industry?

At Rapid Energy, our engineers will recommend the right boiler, deliver quickly (often the same or next day), integrate it with your existing system, manage your fuel supply, and handle everything from installation to collection.

With years of experience across a wide range of industries, we're here to keep your business operational when it matters most.

Choosing the right temporary chiller means understanding how much cooling your site actually requires.

Simply matching the kW rating of an existing chiller isn’t always enough. Factors such as water flow rate, flow and return temperatures, peak demand and site conditions can all affect the capacity needed.

For chilled-water systems, a useful starting point is:

Cooling capacity (kW) = Flow rate (L/s) × 4.186 × ΔT (°C)

Correct sizing helps maintain consistent temperatures without unnecessarily oversizing the system.

Need help working out your requirements? Our Rapid Energy engineers can assess your application and operating conditions to help determine the right temporary chiller capacity for your site.

When an office building's chiller reached the end of its life, waiting for a replacement simply wasn't an option.

Working with a facilities management company in the West Midlands, we supplied and installed a 250kW temporary chiller hire solution over the weekend, ensuring the building remained fully operational while the permanent replacement was delayed.

Despite restricted site access and the need to install the chiller within a secure compound, our engineers delivered the unit early in the morning and had the system fully commissioned before midday.

The result? A comfortable working environment for staff and visitors, with no disruption to day-to-day business operations.

When choosing a temporary chiller, it’s not just about having enough capacity to meet peak demand.

Cooling requirements can change throughout the day as production levels, equipment use, occupancy and outdoor conditions fluctuate.

That’s why part-load performance is so important.

A well-configured temporary chiller can help:
⚡ Reduce unnecessary energy use
🌡️ Maintain stable temperatures
⚙️ Reduce compressor starts and stops
🔧 Limit unnecessary mechanical stress
📈 Respond to changing cooling demand

At Rapid Energy, we consider how a temporary chiller needs to perform across the full range of site conditions, not just at maximum load.
