Happy New Year from all the Seaward Team

We are off to a busy start in 2024 with a mix of leisure and commercial boats in various stages of build, and new orders for our commercial boat customers.

With Storm Ciaran recently blowing through the Solent and causing so much disruption. It’s a good time to reflect on the qualities of a Seaward boat, whether it's a hard-working pilot boat or luxury motor yacht.

Seaward boats are based upon the distinctive Nelson hull design. What does this mean? Simply that it has a hull based upon an original design by TT Boat Designs Ltd.

This company was based here on the Isle of Wight and established by Peter Thornycroft in 1961. Peter had designed and built the first real Nelson for Baron Leopold de Rothschild in 1959. He required a particular boat: "She had to be capable of making Exbury (his home) to the Royal Yacht Squadron (in Cowes) in 30 minutes, in all but the worst weather."

This 29' boat was called Nigella, in one image you can see her after restoration by The Elephant Boatyard, and how her lines are taken forward to this day by Seaward (our Seaward 29 is also pictured).

This design proved itself a great success and in 1962 was developed into the all-GRP-built Nelson 34. This was a bestseller and the Royal Navy bought many, including two VIP launches for the The Royal Yacht BRITANNIA (also pictured). It proved a dependable and weatherly boat that suited Trinity House, the Royal Navy and coastguard stations just as much as it did those using it for pleasure, including Baron Rothschild.

Phil Sampson from Motor Boat & Yachting took a look at an owner's Seaward 35 earlier this year. Here's an extract:
“I’ve been out through the Needles at more than a Force 6, and she was pretty good.” We feel we can rest assured that “pretty good” in David’s book means that the boat was, in fact, totally bulletproof and utterly sure-footed in anything that passage around the western tip of the Isle of Wight could throw at him that day.

Praise indeed.
