Are you becoming the bottleneck in your own business?

If everything depends on you being available to answer questions, solve problems or make decisions, how can your business grow without putting even more pressure on you?

I’ve shared some thoughts on why having the right systems in place can make a real difference to your business and help you move forward.

Workloads are increasing, but you are running on minimal staffing levels and the result of this is increased pressures and demands on your time. This may feel like a catch 22 situation but actually there is a solution, and this involves systemising your business.

The results are in from my recent poll on the current market and they are interesting to see.

I recently shared my observation about how different businesses are navigating today’s economic landscape.

To me, it appears that some larger corporations may be struggling, apart from large companies like Apple, and many Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) seem to be doing surprisingly well.

I asked participants, "Which type of business do you think is better placed to thrive right now?"

Here is how the 21 participants voted:

38% – Small to Medium Enterprises
33% – It depends on the sector
19% – Neither, it’s about leadership
9% – Larger businesses.

These results give us some market insights. They are:

- Agility beats scale in fast-shifting markets (38%)

The majority vote aligns with a clear structural trend showing that speed to adapt and pivot gives businesses a competitive advantage.

While large corporations have deep financial reserves, they are often weighed down by multi-layered sign-offs, rigid processes, and bureaucratic inertia.

In contrast, SMEs sit closer to the frontline and can gather customer feedback on Monday, pivot operations by Wednesday, and launch a solution by Friday.

In times of rapid technological or economic change it appears that being able to turn the ship quickly matters more than the size of the ship.

- Structural tailwinds vary by industry (33%)

The second-largest group rightly pointed out that sector context is critical.

Capital-intensive industries like manufacturing, aerospace, or deep-tech infrastructure still heavily favour large enterprises with deep pockets, supply-chain leverage, and massive economies of scale.

However, in service sectors, software, professional services, and niche e-commerce, small teams leveraging modern AI and automation tools can now punch far above their weight without needing massive overheads.

- Agile leadership is scale-agnostic (19%)

Nearly a fifth of you highlighted that company size is secondary to leadership mindset. A poorly managed small business will stall just as fast as a bureaucratic titan.

Successful leaders, whether running a 10-person firm or a 10,000-person enterprise, can foster a "fail-fast, learn-faster" culture, empowering frontline teams to make decisions, and focusing on customer retention over vanity growth.

Do my poll results accurately reflect what is happening in your industry right now? Let me know in the comments.

A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to vote and share their perspective!

As we head into autumn, it’s natural to reflect on where your business is heading and where you want it to go in the next quarter.

If you’ve been thinking about pivoting, what’s driving that shift?

Is it a new opportunity you’re eager to chase, or a challenge you’re ready to overcome?

Over 17+ years of coaching entrepreneurs across Essex and Suffolk, I’ve found that the push to transform a business usually comes down to a few core ambitions:

• Freedom: Wanting a business that runs smoothly without you needing to manage every detail.
• Time & Lifestyle: Craving more free time, a better work-life balance, or preparing for retirement.
• Growth: Seeking financial independence, personal development, or building a lasting legacy.
• Connection: Desiring to make a bigger impact, help others, and build strong professional networks.

Whether you've spotted a fresh market gap, hit an unexpected hurdle, or simply realised your current setup isn't serving your long-term goals anymore, executing a real shift can feel overwhelming on your own.

That’s where external support makes all the difference.

My clients tell me that working with me as their business coach gives them:

Strategic clarity so they can to see blind spots they might have missed; accountability to keep them on track toward their goals and encouragement, like an athletic coach who guides them through every milestone.

If you’re ready to navigate your next chapter with confidence, let’s have a conversation. Send me a DM.

I regularly share strategies and practical advice to help business owners scale and thrive so follow this profile so you never miss an update.

Have you ever caught yourself thinking: “Why am I still doing this?”

That’s a question I suggest all of the business owners I coach ask themselves.

When you first launch a business, you often have to wear every hat, from sales and marketing to answering the phone, delivering the service or making the products.

I’ve found that business owners can become so used to doing something that they stop questioning whether they should still be doing it.

But as you grow your business and start delegating jobs to contractors or recruiting staff, you need to teach yourself to let go and hand some tasks over.

Otherwise, we create our own bottlenecks.

I once had a client who used to sweep the yard at his premises every morning despite having 10 employees.

To help him delegate the job to a member of staff, I suggested he spend a morning in his office working ON his business, instead of IN it.

When I next saw him, I asked him what happened.

He said, “For the first hour I sat at my desk, but kept looking out of the window at the yard. After a while, I couldn’t sit there any longer and got up and swept the yard.”

This man had to learn to change his mindset in order to delegate and eventually, with my help, he did.

If this story about failing to delegate a task resonates with you, you need to also ask yourself:

Could someone else do it?
Could technology do it?
Could it be simplified?
Or perhaps it doesn’t need doing at all?

Growth isn’t always about adding more.

Sometimes it’s about having the courage to take something away.

So before you finish for the week, think about one thing you’ve done this week and ask yourself: Why am I still doing this?

You might be surprised by the answer.

Start with the end in mind.

One of the things I ask business owners who engage me as their coach is, "Where do you want your business to be 12 months from now?"

It’s a simple question, but one that many business owners haven't thought about before, but it's important to do so.

Starting with the end in mind helps you to be clear about what you want your future to look like.

This can be powerful because your brain has a built-in filtering system called the Reticular Activating System (RAS).

Think of it as a filter that helps your brain notice the things it considers important.

Once you become really clear about your goals, you can start training your brain to look for information, opportunities, ideas and connections that could help you achieve them.

For example, if your goal is to grow your business by 20%, don't just write down “increase sales”.

Be specific and ask yourself questions like:

What does that 20% actually mean in pounds?
Which customers will help to achieve it?
What services or products will contribute to the growth?

Keep that goal visible. Write it down. Talk about it. Review it regularly.

Visualise what achieving it will look and feel like.

The more clearly you define where you want to go, the more your brain has something specific to look for.

Having a clear destination changes what you pay attention to.

So, start with the end in mind.

Where do you want your business to be this time next year?

Are you giving your brain a clear enough picture of where you're going?

Is AI becoming part of the way you run your business?
There’s no escaping the AI conversation at the moment.
It’s changing how businesses work, communicate and make decisions.
But while AI can save time, speed up processes and open up new possibilities, there’s another side to consider.
Used without enough thought, it can also affect your judgement, make your business less distinctive and potentially damage the trust you’ve worked hard to build.
In one of my newsletter, I looked at how businesses can make the most of AI without handing over the driving seat.
It’s not about being pro or anti-AI. It’s about finding an approach that works for your business while keeping human judgement firmly at the centre.
If you’re wondering how much AI is right for your business, have a read:

Isn’t it great what can be done with AI and what is very little effort required! It’s amazing how it can populate forms for us just by letting it listen into our conversations, or answer our queries instantaneously saving time Googling and making sense of the responses. The main emphasis appears...

Are you a building a business or just doing a job you created for yourself?

Have you spent this week building your business of just reacting frantically to what’s been happening?

Having worked as a business coach for almost 18 years in Essex and Suffolk, I find many business owners start with the dream of freedom, flexibility, and financial control.

Yet somewhere along the way, the business takes over.

You become the firefighter, the admin, the salesperson, and the logjam working IN the business instead of ON it.

If your business can't run for a week without you, you haven't built a business, you've just bought yourself a highly stressful job.

If this rings true for you, before the weekend starts, I’d like to challenge you to identify one task that drains your time that someone else, or a system, should be doing.

Decide now that you won't carry it into next week.

Real growth doesn't come from working hard, it comes from putting the right strategy, systems and accountability in place so your business works for you.

Have a great weekend, recharge, and let's make next week one where you take back control.

If you’re looking to scale your business without working 80 hours a week, let's have a chat. Send me a DM and follow my page for top tips.

Mindset can make a bigger difference to your business than you might realise.
Over the last 17+ years as a business coach, I’ve seen how the way a business owner thinks can influence the decisions they make, the actions they take and how they respond when things don’t go to plan.
In this article, I look at some simple mindset shifts that can help you tackle challenges differently and keep moving forward.
I also share a real example of how changing mindset helped one of my clients step into a new leadership role and take his business to the next level.
Have a read and let me know which mindset shift resonates with you most.

Ever wondered why some business owners seem to attract success while others struggle to move forward? Every successful enterprise starts with more than a product, service, or even a plan, it starts with mindset. When I started in business, it was all about establishing the right systems, but the rea

Do you ever feel that your business is stuck in a rut?

As a business coach to business owners in Essex and Suffolk, I sometimes come across businesses that have got themselves into a self-generating loop which causes the frustration of inefficiency and overload.

I call it ATM, which stands for stands for:

A – aggravation
T – time
M – money.

It starts with one problem that creates another using up your valuable time and money.

Have you had this experience in your business?

In this video I talk about the Business ATM model and show you how this happens and what you need to do to get out of it. Click: https://youtu.be/6gjg3Tj3viI?si=nBVPca57HFiPiefS
